New Race Car Build - zossy1's Black NB8B
Hi guys,
Thought I'd post a garage thread for this one...
Many of you know that after a few years of karting, I've been racing the ex-Douglass, ex-Otten "Blue Rocket" for the past 8 months. I've been steadily building up pace with the car, though it has been a bit of a learning curve as the car has some unique characteristics. First logged in 2001, it has had a lot of development and I'm not sure there is much left in it (my best so far has been 1:06.76 at WP). Sadly, I crashed it last month (brake failure coming down the hill into the fish hook at WP) - but the repairs are coming along slowly and we hope to have it ready for the AASA State Titles in November:
So I have decided to embark on a new project - in the midst of having our first child, studying my Masters, and trying to keep the blue one on the track...
This is my 2003 NB8B. It is bog stock and as clean as they come, having done only 65,000kms and pretty much immaculate inside and out. I bought it a few months back - it was a fresh water damaged stat write off. Easy fix but sadly it can't be re registered. I have been tossing up whether to part it out or not... But have decided to make a race car out of it.
Plan at this stage is to strip it out, put coilovers in it, and maybe a pod filter and exhaust, BD bar, 4.3 diff, put some semis on it, and run it in some super sprints. Over time, I might cage it and turn it into an SE replica 2B car, or maybe keep it atmo, build a high comp engine with ITBs, and develop it to replace the blue rocket. Not quite sure yet.
Whatever we end up doing, it will take time. This project will take years with all my other commitments, but I'm hoping to have some fun building my own race car from the ground up.

I notice the blue car has ITB's and no brake booster. Can you advise the brake setup?
Sorry the question is not about the Black NB8B.

Progress has been slow, between work, family, study, fixing blue rocket, etc.
Getting there... Still have a bit to do in the cockpit before moving on.

Hi
If the rims have no gutter rash on the and you will not be using them for your project I would be interested in them. Garry

Engine bay looks perfect Chris, just leave it how it is. You'll be fine :-)
On a more serious note, it looks like you are removing the heater core, ducting etc. Any plans for window demisting?

They are already sold - sorry.

Lol! Yep engine mods are a fair way off yet. I have the blue car if I want to go faster... That's not what this car is about... Yet...
As for demisting, my plan is to roll down the windows... Assuming the car still has windows to roll down!

Any idea of which supersprint class you would be targeting? 2B, 3B, SVB ?

Interesting. I still have the heater core and windscreen ducting in mine, and have wanted to put in some sort of fan to allow that to be used for demisting, as the original fan won't fit due to roll cage restrictions. But it is all too hard, so I might go down the same route as you.

This thread provides some guidance on where my thought processes are in terms of class:
viewtopic.php?f=68&t=65523
I would have loved to just run a more standard class but it looks like that will not be possible...

Looks great, wish I had the time and space to build a similar car.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Re: New Race Car Build - zossy1's Black NB8B
Sadly, given the trials and tribulations we have had with the blue car, I have not had a chance to touch this since the last post.
Still have heaps to do with the blue car too... and rather than have two half-done race cars and racing neither of them, I thought I'd put my eggs in one blue basket...
So this car has been sold. Got luck with her Matty, I look forward to seeing her on track soon!

Thanks Chris!!!! Been slowly working on it and just brought back home by destroyed SE/SP this weekend so been taking out most of the running gear, haltech, seats etc.
Will see you on the track soon!!!! Hopefully within a month or so I may continue to keep track of the Black NB8B's journey in becoming a race car, been taking photos of the SE/SP and the NB side by side whilst working on them both
