New MX-5 to launch in Australia with downsized 1.5 and bigger 2.0-litre engines next year; 2.5 turbo MPS version possible

Mazda MX-5 fans can rest easy. The Japanese car-maker has confirmed a 2.0-litre engine will indeed remain part of the fourth-generation roadster range, which was previously confirmed to open with a downsized 1.5-litre model likely to be priced from under $40,000. And while the 2.0-litre will be the only engine offered in North America, motoring.com.au sources have confirmed Australians will have access to both engines when the new MX-5 goes on sale here in the second half of next year.

No details of either MX-5 engine have been released, but Mazda should reveal more when the Mk4 Miata makes its US debut at the Los Angeles motor show on November 18....read more here: http://www.carsales.com.au/news/2014/convertible/mazda/mx-5/la-motor-show-more-power-for-next-mx-5-47115

And from the article:
Therefore both versions of the new MX-5 – in either six-speed manual or automatic form -- will be quicker than the outgoing model

That's an insane announcement!

My crystal ball reveals the following:

6 months after the release of the 1.6L ND:
Sales of the newly released 2.0L ND are way below expected forecasts.
For most purchasers, this was their first MX5.

6 months after the release of the 2.0L ND:
Sales of the newly released 2.0L ND have met the expected forecasts of the initial 1.5L ND.
For about 50% of the purchasers, this was not their first MX5.
Many purchasers of the 1.5L ND wished they's waited for the 2.0L version, stating that they'd prefer a bit more power and that it's never a good idea to buy the first generation of what's essentially a new car (better to buy the next release after initial DD problems have been discovered and fixed).

ie. Those "in the know" will be prepared to wait for the 2.0L version and any issues with the initial ND will be corrected in the new 2.0L version.
Don't worry about dying, worry about not living!

I read it as they'll see how 1.5 sales go, and confimr interest in 2.0 later on. So we may never see the 2.0 if the 1.5 are good.

Well, I'll be one person who is going to test drive an ND and tell em nice, but with the 1.5 I'm not interested (ie too slow or gutless etc) - assuming that's my honest opinion etc.

If it is under $40K, I'll test drive it.

They other option is they will being the 2.0 in as they premium model and charge a pretty penny extra for it.

Her you go masses. This is the 2.0 more powerful option. More power and a bose stereo system, another $10K on top of the base model please.

Please forget the outgoing model had a 2.0L as standard. But since you are not an car enthuiest but a first time MX5 buyer in your 40s/50s with expendable savings, you'd never knew that anyway.

That's what I think all the local motoring press would say about it and kill the sales.

Not necessarily I think. They could go:
- entirely adequate power/weight ratio
- better fuel economy
- just as much fun (even though a little slower than bigger 2.0L)

Great inprovement from outgoing model.

Welcome back MX5!!!

Mazda have a strong record in premium versions of cars outselling base versions, particularly with their halo models. The top spec of the 6 MPS massively outsold the base spec, and it's been seen with the 3 MPS as well. You could argue this was the case with the NC as well, when the rag top got dropped.

This 1.5 L doesn't sound to powerful

http://www.caradvice.com.au/316318/2015 ... ian-drive/

Around town we noted the throttle pedal could be doughy on initial application, making the engine feel less powerful than it actually is. This is something of a trait for low-output Skyactiv engines, as we’ve noted it in the smaller-engined CX-5, too.

The manual model we drove felt genuinely low on power – hill climbs required rowing from sixth back to third, with revs needing to be kept high to ensure momentum wasn’t lost.

Sounds like it needs to be dríven properly, rather than lazily
