Ah so you were the one who just beat me to it with this engine. Best of luck with the project. All worked out for me as I got another option lined up but keen to see how you go :D

I thought the flow issues were fixed with the last generation VVT BP engines.....

The flow issues were improved slightly with the VVT engines with a re-designed gasket. Still a poor substitute to putting it back to how it should be via a reroute.

Mine took all of about $50 in parts and a portion of a lazy sunday arvo of my time..

Using the stock 1.6 clutch isnt a great idea with the power a cammed, bored, hi comp NB8B motor will put out..

From the research i have done and as Rascal said, for the 2001-2005 models Mazda changed the head gasket to restrict flow to the #1 cylinder to help alleviate the cooling issues.

However if you do a coolant re-route, and use the BP26-10-271 gasket from the 1994-2000 1.8l engine, it helps with cooling even more.

I will still have to do a bit of research to see if it needs to be done as many people are saying to only do it if you have F/I and track the car. I'm not going F/I but the engine is built and I do plan on tracking it. I also forgot to add a new radiator to my shopping list on the previous page, so I could always get a good radiator that will also help with cooling engine temps.

I just found an informative thread here that I will have a good read through..

Ahh, sorry mate.. I have been looking for an engine for so long. As soon as I saw this, I jumped straight on it haha..

Glad to hear you are sorted anyway

Sorry, I should have worded that a little better. I only plan on using the 5 Speed box with the 1.6L Flywheel and Clutch to get the engine running etc. so I can funnel funds into more important things (ie. ITB, Exhaust Manifold and ECU). Once it is up and running, I will invest in a decent clutch and flywheel along with a 6 Speed Box, Torsen LSD etc. Cheers :D

Just a small update while I am still researching parts and gathering funds.

I have ordered some personalised plates!!

The car is now called.. PEWII

I ordered USA style plates for both the front and back and I printed them out to actual size to test how they look on the car.

I am quite pleased with the look  What are your opinions?

On another note.. I can't wait to get rid of the soft top and take the mud flaps off.. I can't stand them haha

Also.. Which moderator do I ask to get the name changed in the thread title?

...errm, I mean, I got a hard top for PEWII last night

I am not fussed about the paint as the whole car will be resprayed at some point.

Nice.

Coolant reroute is worth it, to stabilise temps. Pending how hard the engine is pushed, more timing, better afrs are all potential benefits.

What ECU are you looking at acquiring?

Still unsure what ECU to run. I have been recommended Adaptronic but still need to do a lot of research and talk to more people.

I won't be buying one for a while as I still need to buy ITB's and a bunch of other stuff. So I have plenty of time to decide.

Cheers, Liam.

decide who is tuning it first and pick the ECU that they support, unless you are tuning it yourself.

Another ITB build in Queensland nice.

I think I will be taking it to MX5 Plus to be tuned. I have not spoken to them yet but I believe you take your car there Mark and they have been helping with your ITB setup?

I would love to be able to tune it myself but I don't think that will happen.

Junkee my car is always at Automotive Plus :D The engine will be back in soon so you can visit and have a look/listen probably about mid Feb. Also you may get to see the MX5 race car with Jenvey's, same basic motor as mine but without the need to be road streetable.

Are you getting Jenvey's if so Pat at Competition Systems is really helpful/knowledgable and will put you on the right path. Jason and Pat have had continuing discussions since my build.

Give Jason a ring and discuss your needs he will be happy to help, provided he is not flat strapped. Jason will respond to emails as well. Automotive Plus are doing a lot of development work with ITB's on both non and road registered cars. With luck a solution will be found to using longer trumpets and an air box for a road registered car.

Automotive Plus use GT auto to tune so possibly Haltech or Motec but again have the discussion.

Look forward to seeking your end product. Group ITB photo is looking good.

How'd you go getting the hard top on - did the car have the Frankenstein bolts and strikers? I've still got those bolts somewhere if you need them!

These are the brackets I was talking about:
http://shop.jassperformance.com/index.p ... duct_id=86

But you would be able to make some up like these super easily - they've even mounted the side ones on a different bolt so you don't need to cut into the plastic:

Because reasons.

I'd love to see how this goes - I'm thinking of putting a newer 1.8 with ITB's and a 6-speed in an NA8 down the track! Good luck with the build :D
