Please HELP! NA MX5 will Not start!!!

Postby ZL » Tue Oct 28, 2014 1:15 am

Hi guys my NA6 mx5 has stopped working since Saturday. It just stop working in the morning, the day before it was working perfectly.
The car cranks very strong but fails to start.
What i check so far.

- All 4 leads sparks.
- There is fuel in tank.
- Battery is working.

* I'm pretty sure its something to do with fuel system, as when i spray starter fluid in the intake, it will ignite but stops instantly.
Also if i leave the car for quite a few hours it also ignites and stops instantly.
Another possibility is the Aftermarket alarm, when i turn the key to ON there is engine lights in the dash, stereo working etc.

- i try to diagnose the fuel pump with Ping in GND and FP but i have no idea what im listening too, but i can hear buzzing noise form the injectors??. I check the really large fuse in the engine bay fuse box, which is suppose to be the fuel relay. It looks fine, but you can't really see inside.

Please help, i need to car to get to work, also can't get it to a mechanic to get it checked out.

Where are you located?

Sounds like it has got spark.

Is the fuel pump kicking in?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Hi, i'm located in Sydney.

Yep all for leads sparks strongly.

Day before it stopped i ran the fuel tank really low, since i fuel up around 10L of fuel.
Thats why i suspect the fuel Pump.

When i jump the GNP - FP in the diagnoses box and turn the ignition to ON there is noise from the injector area but i'm not sure what else i'm look for.
I can't hear any other noise. I even open the fuel cover and try to listen inside and all i can hear is wind noise like when you listen to a sea shell.

Thanks for helping

The fuel pump is under the rear 'parcel' shelf behind the seats. See if you can hear it when you jump the GNP-FP? You can also test it by starting the engine with the jump connection still in place, as jumping bypasses the relay. If this works then you may have an issue with the Circuit Opening relay. This relay hides under the steering column. Also ensure that all electrical connections to the air flow meter are good as these can affect the fuel pump as well.

There is a few posts on the big forum relating to this.

Hope that helps.

Hi is there another link to the link you posted? i can get access to it.

Also i just removed the pump assembly. I Put a link between GNP and FP and turn the ignition to ON and listen directly over the fuel pump assembly and there was no sound. So is that certain that its the fuel pump thats the issue.
Also with the fuel pump assembly removed is there any way for me to test if its working outside of the car?

Oh one last thing where can i buy a fuel pump in Sydney? I know mania sells one but they are really far from where i am and i don't have access to a car ;'(
Inner west/ metro sydney. Is there mazda parts store or others like that within my proximity.

Thanks

If the fuel pump tests ok off car then there's a chance the problem is at the top of the fuel pump/fuel guage wiring loom on the fuel pump/fuel guage where it plugs into the top of the fuel tank cover. Simplest way to check this is by testing the top two connectors outside the top of the fuel tank with a multimeter for continuity - if there is some resistance found it will impact on normal starting - see the following for where the issue might be located: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=46425

Okay this is totally Crazy, i remove the fuel assembly tested it and works fine than i install the fuel assembly back in and turn the key the car turns starts up perfectly??
So confused!! I'm going to remove it and give it a good clean.
Should i replace the fuel pump? What can be the issue that stop the car from working could it be the reserve fuel blocking the fuel line?

Also if itsworking now would it randomly stop working, don't want to get stranded as i am so lucky that the car stop working on my drive way.

Thanks guys for the help, much appreciated.

Read all of this & also see pics: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=46425

Yes it could unless you identify the actual issue & address the actual cause, hence suggestion to read all of above thread to identify & fix.

Your post reinforces Pauls suggestion about the loom and dirty contacts etc. If you remove the pump again, clean the contacts, connectors etc and then test them, do a 'wiggle' test to check for constant continuity.

Watch the For Sale pages and consider an NB glass window top.

I'd still be concerned about the connections, especially if blackened. Unless its a red Plymouth fury, cars don't fix themselves.
