Junkee's PEWII - NA With Built VVT Engine
Hello everyone. My name is Liam and I have just bought my first NA MX5. I will start at the beginning and hopefully one day have a diary of all my progress with the car and any stories along the way.
I had always known about the MX5 but never given it any attention or known much about them, until recently. I started seeing more and more photos popping up on my FB newsfeed and loved the look of them. I have always been a fan of the RX7 FD and Honda S2000, so it's no wonder I liked the MX5.
I started my research on Wikipedia and soon learnt about the different models and found out that it was the NA that I had been seeing. I searched for more pictures of the NB but quickly didn't like the look of the headlights. I can appreciate that they are a great car and I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but personally they remind me too much of the Hyundai Excel X3 headlights, and I hate Excels. As the NB is very similar to the NA, I love the rest of the body, but prefer the pop up lights of the NA. I still love seeing what other people do with the NB's but I don't want one for myself.
Once I started looking into the cars a bit more, I realised how good of a track car they make which is exactly what I have wanted to get into since I was a kid. Then the next greatest thing about them was the price. From what I can see, you have a great platform at a cheap price and I think they are under valued.
Originally when searching for the right MX5 to buy, it seemed like the only color available was red haha. I quickly hated red and wanted either black, white or silver (note: I have since seen many great builds in red, and I know like it). I found a 1990 Silver Eunos Roadster with Hardtop for sale locally and went to have a look. My mate's father got excited when I told him we were going to look and he wanted to come. I said yes but told him I don't have the money right now to buy this one, but I wanted to have a look at it and go for a test drive anyway as I had never dríven one before. After me and my friend had gone for the test drive, I told the dealer that I will have a think about it etc. and as we walked away, his father was still standing next to the car. I looked back and he said "Aren't you buying it?", I laughed and said, "I am going to have a look at a couple more first" then he said, "If you don't buy it, I will". We thought he was joking but when we got home he was telling his wife how much he wants it and was trying to convince her. My friend and I thought it would be good for him, as he is now 75 years old and he loves building things around the house and getting into the paddock down the back and working etc. But for the past year he has had to hold back a little as his body can't do what he wants to do.
The next day he went and had another look with his wife. He was there for about an hour and we called him and he had bought it and he asked us to come pick it up for him. Once we got it home, he went for a little drive and them parked it in the driveway. He was out the front for a few hours just looking at it . So its safe to say, he loves it.
Anyway, back to my continued searches. After driving the Silver Roadster, it felt great but I felt it was lacking a bit of power. I started doing some more research as to what engine would be good to swap in when I buy one. I liked the idea and the simplicity of the 1.8 but wondered if it would still not be enough. I looked into how much a turbo kit or supercharge kit would be and have left it at that as I then found the US thread for the K20/24 swap and quickly wanted one. I showed another friend that loves Hondas and he loved the swap. I looked into it more and found that the kit offered by KMiata will not work with RHD cars. Then I saw the MONDA thread here on these forums and now I have some hope. I love the idea of N/A raw power + VTEC, with plenty of headroom.
Soon I found the right car for me on these forums. It is a White 1990 NA6 with a broken engine at a great price. This was perfect as I wanted to do an engine swap for something with a bit more go. The car was located in Harvey Bay, which is a 9+ hour round trip from the Gold Coast. We left at 5.30am yesterday and got home at about 4pm with the car. I decided to call the car "Snowflake"
After talking to my mate that I live with who owns an Evo VIII, he said until the RHD K20/24 swap kit is available from BYP and I save enough to do the swap, I should just chuck in either a 1.6 or a 1.8 so I can at least enjoy the car for what it is and maybe even do a couple of days at the track with him and another friend we have who races a cobra. I think this may be the best option for now but am having trouble deciding which one to take..
Option #1
1.6 Long nose (150km) from MX5plus for $990 which should be a clean swap for the old if I am not mistaken + New timing belt kit/ water pump etc. = Around $1,300 total.
Option #2
1.6 Short nose (95km) from wreckers for $650 + New timing belt kit/ water pump etc. = Around $950 total.
Option #3
1.8 (89-97) for around $1,300 + FM 1.8 swap kit for ~$220 + 94-97 Exhaust headers, downpipe and cat + New timing belt kit/ water pump etc. + anything else I am forgetting? = Roughly $2,000-$2,200 total.
Either swap I do will be left N/A while I save for the K20/24 swap but I am unsure if it would be better to spend the extra $800-$1,000 now for the 1.8 swap or put that money towards other things like; Hardtop, LSD, Wheels/Tyres etc.
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated and I will keep this thread updated with any more progress as it happens
Here is a couple pics of Snowflake on the trailer when we loaded it up:

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
Congratulations and welcome to the obsession!
I look forward to seeing what you get up to with this car over time, it's always fun to see how people develop their cars to suit their own tastes.
BTW, white is my pick for the NA body shape.
As for the engine, it comes down to time frame, if it's only going to be in there for a year or two then a cheap shortnose is the simplest solution and will allow you to focus your resources on developing other aspects of the car. That being said, you'll be able to recoup more of the money spent if you have a longnose or 1.8 to sell when the time comes for a K20/24 swap.
The other advantage of a newer 1.8 (don't rule out a VVT from a later NB) is that should you decide that a forced induction solution on a Mazda engine is better suited (would certainly be a lot easier/cheaper) then you won't need to source another engine. Hopefully you will have the opportunity to drive a FI BP engine equipped MX5 before you make a decision so at least you know what the alternatives are.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
Go for the 1.8, its better than the 1.6 and you might as well fork out a few extra $$ to get it than the standard 1.6.
Despite the appeal of the K20/K24 swap, its going to be pretty expensive (I think around 15k+ or something like that), so going FI with the 1.8 is cheaper and it would make a good amount of power.
Spend the rest of the money on good tyres, brakes, suspension and other supporting mods.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
+1 on using a NB 1.8, however it is not a straight swap and your budget will need to be reviewed.
If you need to drive a Naturally Aspirated NB engine (in a NA6) let me know as I will be in Brisbane again soon.
Actually I was looking at that car, if it was parted out as I just want a shell
Again, welcome to the obsession. Where abouts in QLD are you?

NB8A 1.8L + NA6 flywheel and clutch + S15 turbo = the best combo you'll love it.
Much easier and cheaper than the honda engine swap, although that would be very cool.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
Thanks for all the support and the advice so far
The K swap is more of a dream swap and would take me some time to accomplish.. I knew it would be expensive from reading oztrackdays Monda thread and he just PM'd me and said he spent $30k+ but if done again, it would be around $15k-$20k.. My goal is to do it one day, just not yet haha..
I did consider the NB 1.8 but didn't know it was much different from the NA 1.8 engine. As it is more expensive and I have read, a little harder to swap, I originally took it out of the equation.
I was also looking into the 6 speed box as well. I read that it is stronger, so will handle more power, but a lot of people said they still prefer the 5 speed over the 6 speed, so I was left unsure.
I found an NB 1.8 Engine with 85,000 km on it that includes alternator, exhaust headers, ECU, wiring harness etc. and the 6 speed box for $3.3k
Do you think that it would be best to go for something like that? If so, what else would be needed to do the NB/6sp swap besides the swap kit?
Also, thanks for the offer Mark, I will definitely take you up on that I am on the Gold Coast but can travel up to Bris.. What gearbox are you running in that one?

I would say swapping difficulty is identical, all it needs extra are some egr block off plates, that you bolt on when the engine is out anyway.

Probably best to drive both and see. The 6 speed can handle more power, but if you dont have that in mind then there is no point, its expensive and takes a bit to get used to.

IMO no way. As you need an NA8 alternator, NA8 headers, as the NB ones have egr bung that would need welding up and also wont bolt to the rest of your exhaust without cutting and welding. You also dont need the harness or ecu lol. You re-use your NA6 CAS (gotta cut and extend the 4 wires) and thats about it. You do need the 1.8L engine mounts in either case. You re-use your NA6 throttle body with the FM adaptor plate.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
Thanks for the info Emily.. I totally forgot that I couldn't use the exhaust manifold from the NB..
MX5 Plus have an NB8A (98-00) engine for $1,650 but I would still need to buy the alternator, headers and cat..
I had a look on Wikipedia and although it's not the most reliable source of information, it says that VVT was on the 2001+ year models.. Is it better to find one with VVT?

It is running a 6 speed and a 4.3 torsen dif as of about 7 days ago. Previous was a 6 speed with a 4.1 torsen. I have run a 5 speed and a 4.1 torsen and a 5 speed with a stock dif.
There is a lot of discussion on the forum at the moment on the mix of gearbox and diff so I will leave it there
If you can get up to Southbound BP at Burpengary next Saturday you can go for a spin.

Pretty sure VVT won't work in an NA without the matching ecu or something like that but I'll let the pros answer because I may be way off.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
An update that will finally get the ball rolling!!
I managed to find myself an engine after months of looking
Here it is.. A built 1.8L VVT engine thanks to MXED1.
The engine was picked up in Sydney by a family member and dropped to me on the Gold Coast.
Some of the work that was done by MXED1 before landing in my hands:
• 2005 NB8B as base, bored to about 1.9
• Forged 11.5:1 Supertech pistons.
• Balanced Spool forged conrods.
• Balanced original crankshaft.
• The internals were rebuilt using a Flyin Miata rebuilt kit which includes ACL race bearings for the crank and big ends.
• Supertech 1mm+ intake valves in recut seats.
• Head work just to clean up the bowls and remove casting burrs.
• Supertech upgraded valve springs with titanium retainers.
• Mazdaspeed Shim under bucket lifters.
• Tighe Cams of 11mm lift and pretty long duration.
• New water pump.
• The engine and head have all been hot tank dipped and the block painted black.

Re: Junkee's NA "Snowflake"
Now that I have the engine, I can start gathering the required parts so it can go in the NA.
High Priority Shopping & To Do List:
I will likely use the stock 1.6L Flywheel and Clutch along with the 5 Speed Gearbox that I already have for now.
Any suggestions or discussion regarding these parts would be greatly appreciated

Lower Priority Shopping & To Do List:

Will you require a coolant re-route?
I thought the flow issues were fixed with the last generation VVT BP engines.....
