I really dont think you need to spend 50K to go out and have fun and have folks to race with.
Lets face it, over the course of a race cars life the bills will add up, and sure, you might spend 50K in 5 years, because that s what you like to spend money on, and you want to stay at the front
There are lots of mx5 race cars that would be competative sitting in garages that you could buy for 10-20K, turn up and be very competative. You just have to ask around
Of course and car is going to cost you in maintenence, and the more highly strung, the more expensive that will be
The QR car that Sonke got was far less expensive, and if more folks show up to race ( which is something Prodsports is actively encouraging and facilitating- Sonke is a prime example) then there will be battles at the back of the grid.

I have an NC which I bought as a flood write off.
Car has got a complete stock engine, but has intake, exhaust, ECU flash, brake pads on stock rotors, cage, coilovers and swaybar.
I reckon it owes me $25K and if had my chance to do it again I think I could do it a fair bit cheaper.
That is for a car which is almost new.

I compete against other cars in the middle of the 2f field and I have had the most fun I have ever had, dicing with 3-4 other cars all of which are within in tenths for most races.

We are 2-3 sec per lap on the QR long circuit than the leaders.
Those at the back of the 2f are 10-11 sec per lap slower.
Driver and car are both equal factors

If you MUST WIN 2f then come on board and spend truck loads, If you want to have fun, just turn up and find someone to race against.

I hadn't realised ProdSports was such an unprofessional category. Sorry to hear it.[/quote]

I wouldn't call it unprofessional..... It's just a boy's club.... Every one I have dealt with from the club, have been more than helpful, nice, etc still send me emails and ask nicely if I would like to drive in a race weekend.
I.M.O.They, like to work hard, play hard and spend hard.... (they bend the rules as they see fit) It's there club, they can do what they want with it.....

It's not the mx5s I've got a problem with it's the low production super cars that are now aloud to run, I.E. GT3 pokers, Moslers, HPLE..... Those things are super quick and when things go wrong at that speed, s#it gets real, really quick.
Good example turn 6 QR last year, with the GT3 spec car, that killed the trainer and put the young driver in hospital
If a slower car was in the way and got hit up the ass end in a race..... Could of killed more than one person.
There is no way any of the slower PSCRAQ cars could take a hit like that. It's the main reason why I won't run with super cars on the track. I've got Club level safety gear, Not NASCAR V8 super car safety. But each to there own.

This is only my opinion, it's up to the person running on the track, to make there choice.

I'm sure I'll get Matt R, Tbro... Telling me how wrong I am, how soft I am... But it's just the way I feel about it.

I was out there on, driving on Friday and came out to watch/cheer on some friends racing on Sunday.

I started at the back of the field, and for the next year or so had a group of 4 of 5 of guys at the rear of the field battling every race – none of us especially quick given our machines but big smiles after every race.

Someone mentioned on another thread racing $1,000 bangers. Couple of observations. I would be concerned for them what kind of safety and cage they would have in their low budget bomb. I also would be worried for myself about their brakes coming into every corner.

Spec classes are still a money battle. You don’t think the guys at the front of spec miata in the US or the Excels locally are spending umpteen more than the mid and rear of the pack? The Spec Miata guys strip down and rebuild their entire engines regularly – sometimes after every race - run fresh rubber yada yada yada. In the more controlled classes the moneyed guys will buy 5 or 6 motors and pick the best one and throw/sell the rest.

The dollars arms race is unavoidable. Just pick your budget, go do it and you will have a ball.
