Best advice I can give is take it to a Air conditioning specialist, there is a good one behind the 4x brewery.

Sound like the compressor clutch has shat itself, can be done on the car, not that easy but doable.

They will also replace the receiver/dryer ( fancy name for a filter ) required by law, and o rings, evacuate and replenish oil and recharge system. Thats the proper way to do it.

Most workshops these days get someone in or outsource it to a different workshop, so save yourself a drive and find a local auto electrician that specialising in a/c, tip, look for one that does trucks, their as tight as, so if they can keep them happy the a/c people will be good.

Thanks Phil

Hi Terry,

I've dug back into my emails & the info I have from the dealership is as follows:

"Sorry to hear the Air Con is not saveable. Be assured that generally speaking MX-5s are considered very solid vehicles with few issues. Sadly people often stretch this by not performing regular maintenance and that does lead to issues.

Unfortunately, the source of the noise is the air compressor, armature & pulley which in this age of model requires a system replacement rather than parts.

These vehicles use the same belt to drive Air Con and Power Steering. The bearing that is worn out is always turning with the engine and pressure will inevitably lead to the belt being thrown; that will take out power steering and possibly damage other systems (leaving air turned off would only slightly lessen load)".

I'll see what the guys at Automotive Plus reckon and if its definitely a job for an air con specialist I'll try the one you mention - I used to live in Auchenflower so know the 4x brewery area well.

Cheers

tbro is (in my opinion) unbiased and hence I will put more weight on his advice, that is go to an air con specialist. If it was a mechanical then go to a mechanical specialist like Automotive Plus. As I have stated I have Automotive Plus stickers on my car, however I would not have the stickers if they were not professional.

I have just had my A/C system overhauled and although I work in a dealership with several techs I would happily use - sublet out to an air con pro
Replace compressor flush and re-gas new receiver dryer, belt and all adjustments to make it like new again
under $1000
Icy Cold and magnificent! just in time for the warmer weather!
