Can't believe this topic is still continuing!!!!
Come on Mazda, you've done half a release. Grow some balls and let us know NOW, what the hell we'll get for our buck.
If anything, you are loosing customers.

Personally I'm in no hurry
Perhaps my lack of haste is why I'm not concerned with what size motor and how much power does it generate
Had a great run on Sunday with Sunshine Coast club
Then came back to Brisbane the back way to miss traffic on the HWY
Can't think of a single time I needed "more power"
but loved the winding roads and wind in my hair
I'm glad Mazda isn't following the yank concept
Forget handling...just make it go faster!
You can't demand respect....you have to earn it

My wife says she doesn't need more power in her Hyundai Sonata but when I drive it it frustrates me no end. There are cars with handling and power. I never hear a Porsche 911 owner go "it needs less power". My new golf r has both and when I get the mx5 finished it will have both. Power is only a problem if your a neanderthal with the go pedal. Otherwise it can't hurt. It will definitely win over many more potential owners.

My wife wants power! For a few golden weeks when my Anglia was off the road we had a loan of a Coombes MkII Jag: 3.8l, 11:1 pistons, cams, triple 2 1/2 SUs, custom exhaust. Anything from 4000 to 7000 in any gear and it would flatten you into the back of the seat. :) She thinks that was the only car we'd ever had that had enough power. She's not that keen on our MX5 because, while it does 0-100 in about 6, it lacks torque. I know what she'd think of a 1500.

That's the bit that I don't understand - if Mazda could then why not?

Reminds me of similar organisational mistakes typically seen in big business when committees have control - they make all right decisions for the wrong reasons.... and then wonder why they failed !

When I joined this forum earlier in the year, I complained of a lack of power and everyone raved on about how you don't need power just better skills and suspension, tyres and brake mods.

My opinion is that Mazda won't give us the power because so many people don't complain about a lack of power.

Now I finally appear to be relating to others that also agree we WANT more power!!!

Funny thing is that some of those very same forum members have now switched teams, yet it was never a question for me from the outset but fact.

\looks at Jaffa parked at right angles to the C-Class wagon so we can fit two cars in a single car garage

Uh, yeah, it's open top two seater 1 tonne car with no storage and in ND guise 1.5 cm longer than a late '90s Mitsubishi Mirage - pretty much your definition of 'toy'.

Wakey wakey....hands off snakey

Mazda USA have been screaming for more power for 25 years
Mazda Japan have said....you don't like it...dont market it

So....If it ain't broke don't fix it....this underpowered sports car is successful

Many aren't fussed about "more power" we are past that
For those that haven't got there yet....add forced induction....simple
Support the after market industry that supports the go faster devotees
You can't demand respect....you have to earn it

The mx5 isn't a rocket ship, its not meant to be and not advertised as one, we all know this and are aware of it when we bought our mx5's. So there not a fast car (in a straight line) but they certainly aren't slow or 'underpowered'. Anyone who says they are slow have either owned/dríven way too many truly fast cars or have never been in a truly slow and underpowered vehicle. Compared to most average cars the mx5 does quit well.

If you personally think its too slow or 'underpowered' (from your point of view) either don't buy one, put up with it or add forced induction and stop complaining. For the majority that buy an mx5 straight line speed isn't really applicable and the stock power levels are adequate. If you cant exploit a gap or overtake a road train with a stock powered mx5 frankly you shouldn't be driving.

Odd and speed freak have got it right in my view and apparently Mazdas view as well. Bob Hall joked if you cannot drive well with 90hp then you will not drive better with 900hp. The BRZ and 86 are hardly dragsters they are about the driving entertainment. People may not complain of modern Porsches being underpowered but most of us are not going to own one - car snobbery and status is a big factor but an MX5 works very well and affordable.

The other thing which I constantly see driving in Victoria is the increasing crackdown on compliance with low speeds and control with not one road legal over 110. We don't need high power but we do appreciate high fun and an MX5 in its convertible guise is different to the others.

How can adding a nice tractable power plant with more power make it a worse car? It can't. Obviously I've had far too many high powered cars in the past because the mx5 is slow and it is underpowered. How can you not agree when your low slung special feeling roadster has trouble getting out of a Corollas way.

More power won't make you a better driver but it will solve a shortcoming that the mx5 has and make a great car better. So glad Mr Morlock doesn't agree with me.

Dear Mazda,

Please sell me an ND mx5 with a 1.5l engine for under 30k.

If it comes on steel wheels and without stereo/safety/spare tyre so be it. Give it ugly black bumpers, nasty cloth interior and halogen headlights for all I care.

Sincerely,

.01% of the market.
