Help! Warm start issue nb8a!

Postby callanr » Fri Oct 03, 2014 11:16 am

Hey guys, I have done a lot of searching but can't seem to find an answer to what's wrong with my nb8a.

The symptoms are that the car is perfect when starting in the morning or after having sat for a good two hours plus, but when I go to start it up after a short stop, it just turns over and over and after a few tries it splutters to life but runs terribly. If I turn it off again and leave it a few mins it will start and run fine. I have bought a new (used) coil pack off a member, but the problem still exists a day later so I went all out and bought a brand new coil pack (recommended by my current mechanic) and sure enough the problem still exists. When the car is not starting there is no spark at all.

Really appreciate any feedback/suggestions :)

If there is no spark at the coil, then you most likely have a wring, crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor issue.
If there is spark from the coil, then it's plugs or leads.

I have a very similar problem. Sometimes If I start my '99 nb after a short rest (mins to a few hrs but so long as engine is still warm) the engine will start on two cylinders.
Only one side of the coilpack fails to fire and if I remove a lead from the good side, the other side will start firing and all is well (you could try this if you are in a jam).
I have just returned from a chat with an automotive electrician and he recommended replace the crank position sensor (it is recommended to do the cam angle sensor at the same time but I have already done this) as he is 90% sure that I'd the issue based on my explanation of the symptoms.

He also said it could be a faulty temperature sensor somewhere as this will affect the operation of the other sensors in the ignition system (I am paraphrasing, I personally don't have much car knowledge).

Things I have done that have NOT fixed the issue (assuming we have the same problem, which may not be the case) are:
New coilpack
New leads
New plugs
New side O2 sensor (i hear there are two, another at the back of engine? I haven't changed that though)
New cam angle sensor
Checked all electrical grounding points
Cleaned throttle body and intake manifold (not sure if this is likely to even help)
Checked ECU for water damage and moved under glovebox (I have a leak in my soft top and get water under passenger side carpet)

After all this, I still have the same problem but NEVER from a cold start.

I am ordering a new cranks sensor tonight and if I forget to report back give me a pm to ask if it worked.

Thanks for all your responses! finally found the issue. faulty cam angle sensor... no doubt that it was the last thing I have changed (of course) but at least I can not say that it has new plugs, leads, coilpacks, crank angle sensor and cam angle sensor. haha
