Coil Packs

My 1993 NA 1.6 has now done 195K. I'v had it for afew years now and don't know if the coil pack has ever been changed. I'm possibly just being paranoid, but I think I at least ought to have a spare. I drive the car eveyday to and from work and don't want to be stranded. I don't see the point in buying an unknown second hand one. Any suggestions on the best place for a non-genuine one (I don't wish to pay Mazda's prices) There's a new one one on ebay at the moment for about $180, brand not stated.

I wouldn't buy an eBay one. There are a lot of us here been stung by really dodgy eBay toyota ones for COP setups. I'd prefer 2nd hand at the right price or new genuine from UK or USA.

Many thanks. Perhaps I will get a second had one then and keep it in the boot (after checking it works) as an emergency spare.

If you check with any of the auto elects or Bursons or diagnostics guys they all source from local distributors and often get them ex stock or next day service. The ones you buy locally ,albeit all imported ,will be ok brands.
So if your car dies completely on the side of the road is it going to be a coil pack and will you be able to make that repair safely. If you have NRMA or RACV roadside service it's towed safely and probably repaired next day- and if you have full care you get a taxi etc.
A used one at the right price might make you feel better.

You could always try MX5Parts or Arlington Mazda, not sure on their prices but they would be bound to have them otherwise just pick up a good cond used one.

What's the point in having the car in the garage? For may years I used to pass every morning a guy driving an unrestored, original, MGTC to work, I was heading into the city and he was coming from it. It was almost always on the Iron Cove Bridge in Sydney that we passed. It used to cheer me up every time I saw him.

The only reason mine isn't my DD, is she's now an ageing yet spirited lady. She'll still perform for me on my days off, but gets a well deserved break when I'm working.

I agree completely! I buy my cars to drive and enjoy them not to park them in the garage. Plus what fun is an mx5 if its parked in the shed?

I purchased from eBay a while ago and got genuine mazda. I contacted the seller first to confirm.

Mines a daily driver, meaning my turbo xr6 sits in the shed waiting patiently. I new a guy with an MG A that was his daily driver for over 25 years, went through four engines and three gearboxes. Exceptional effort I reckon.

I had a '56 MGA Mk2 when I was about 19. Stupidly I sold it because the girlfriend at the time wasn't allowed out in it. In hindsight I should have said bye bye to the chick & kept the MG. :cry:
