Which car club in QLD

Postby The American » Mon Sep 22, 2014 5:25 pm

This may be a little heretical, but here goes.

I know that the QLD Mx5 club is available and runs motorsport events, but these events are all on week days. I'd like to join a club I can participate in on weekends and is CAMS affiliated.

I'm currently looking at MGCCQ ($80) or HSCCQ ($50).

Who is a member of what?
Any recommendations?

The MX-5 Club of Qld is a CAMS affiliated car club.
So, you can join the that marque club (makes sense if you own an MX-5), participate as a member, get a member's discount on any MX-5 Club track days that you can attend and still qualify for a CAMS licence to participate at MGCC and HSCC events.

I suppose my point is about joining and contributing to a club I can participate in - weekday events are just not workable for me. I'm interested in hearing of other clubs that people have enjoyed as an Mx5 owner.

I was an active motor sport participant and member of the Mx5 Club in Perth (not CAMS affiliated), but their event schedule ran on weekends. I also joined the Mini Car Club of WA for CAMS affiliation and for the State Motorkhana comp run by that club.

I was a member of the MGCCQ - vice President at one time - and always felt like a bit of a poor cousin when I was MGless and only had the MX-5.
The CAMS clubs here in Qld (such as BMW, MG, Holden, MX-5 etc.) all tend to cross participate at each others events.
The MX-5 Club was running a motorsport competition program that included hillclimb (MGCC) and motorkhana (HSCC) events. Those events were not included in this year's calendar however, they could possibly return under the new management.
There are still the MX-5 Club weekend social runs of course...

Club track days are predominately on week days in SE QLD due to the heavy bookings and high cost for hiring the tracks on a weekend. The Porsche club is the only one that I am aware of that hold regular weekend track days. The MG club holds regular hill climb events at Mt Cotton which are on weekends and as I understand it are open to other marques participating.

The best club track days around here seem to be MX5, BMW and Porsche. BMW are also on weekdays.

The MX5 club usually has 5 track days per year, although they might have had more in the past year or two, but surely taking a week worth of annual leave each year to do track days isn't too difficult? Especially when the calendar is announced early in the year...

Unfortunately, most of my annual leave is consumed by a Christmas shut down. If I spent the rest on track days during the year, I'd have little left for other necessary family activities. I could do it, but my priorities dictate otherwise.

I am also not a member of the club on the basis that the Motorsport is always on a Monday. I could make any day but a Monday work.

I chose to do the Street Sprints series as these are run on weekends.

I'd rather participate in MX5 Motorsport but Mondays are entirely unworkable for me.

Fair enough :)

BMW club days are usually on a Friday if that helps anyone reading this...

I'm a member of the MX5 club, for both the track days and the social runs, when I am in the country or have a weekend spare, a rare thing these days.

I am also a member of the HRCC Qld as I have an interest in historic racing and also want to do the odd hill climb that they put on like Noosa Classic in November. They also put on a couple of race meetings at Warwick each year and I can play in regularity if I want. I also get free entry to teh race meetings as a perk of the membership.

And the third club is the PSCRAQ as that is the association that runs prod sports racing in Qld and that's what I race when I have a car.....

If you join up any CAMS club you will be able to events like the Hill climb series at Mt Cotton, motorkhanas, Noosa Hill climb and so on. For track days, unless you want to specifically run at the Morgan Park supersprint series and just run at Lakeside and QR then you don't need to be a member of a club for their sprint series run on the weekends.

Thanks all for your thoughts. I will keep an eye on the mx5 five club calendar for future events that fit my limits. I've signed up for a 'come n try' day at Mt Cotton with the MG Car Club in mid October. Looking forward to it, and its given me a deadline to work to, to get my car ready!

Gslender, it's on Sunday 19th October. I have registered for the come and try as well as the test and tune that follows, so as to make the most of it. Now I've got a deadline to get the car track worthy!
