Oversized oil filter

How much for a gen NA6/Z79A? A Z79A as already posted about numerious time in this thread. It is $8 from SCA/Bursons etc.

slender known brands are usually a pretty good guide and the brand name has to be owned to be used i.e. Bursons as an example know where they source their products and would not have anything to do with counterfeits. Its common to be offered house brands or known brands. People who are really fussy can take the trouble to see who the manufacturer is and maybe what Quality systems they use- admittedly most of us are not going to that amount of trouble.

Every chance these pics are upside down again. Sorry. Looks as if I measured pretty accurately for the filter though.

Ryco Z442, Mazda, Ryco Z145A. I have no idea which holes are inlet or outlet but it does seem the bigger the filter the more holes there are. Dunno whether this changes how well the filter works.

Yes, I promise not to increase oil change frequences just because there's a bigger filter. Unless experience proves otherwise, will continue to use the largest filter that fits as it's $6 cheaper than the middle sized one and the same price as the smallest one.

doesn't really matter how many holes there are in the filter, the pressure is the same as the exit hole from the filter into the block is still the same diameter. so the pressure will always be the same at the point of exitting the filter.

What you seem to be forgetting is that the micron ratings of the filter is what you really need to know. It will give you a sure fire way of telling how well the filter will do it's job. There's a fine line between flow restriction and volume of the filter also. If the bigger and smaller filters both have the same micron rating then they will both filter the same but the smaller will always be blocked first (same amount of oil has to be filtered regardless of size). Either way service intervals should not be increased because your running a larger filter.
Just so you know too , the filters flow from the outside through to the inside. The inside is the clean side of the filter .

Most posters seem to be concentrating on flow/pressure, & overlooking filtration efficiency (ability to remove contaminents)

Remember, a filter becomes more efficient as it gets dirtier! - the more dirt particles in the media, the more particles it will then trap.
Minimum filtration is when the filter is new.
Maximum filtration is at the point just before bypassing starts (after this point, bypassing will keep the flow up, but of course some un-filtered oil is then entering the engine)

So, the factory spec filter will be more efficient earlier than a larger non-spec one. It may be splitting hairs, but most cars I've seen with small filters have the space to fit a taller one. But the factory doesn't.

I'd say the factory spec filter is correct for flow & filtration efficiency for a factory spec engine. Change it at least as often as factory intervals to ensure zero bypass.

Even though I started the thread I'm bored with it now, having listened to what everyone said, and having done further appropriate research based on that, and having made my decision (see a few posts back).
