Phones are electronics.
Filters are not.
Correlation between size/effectiveness between the two product types = 0

Re: Oversized oil filter
Years ago ryco listed two filters for Gemini's. One standard size, one a little bigger that was a heavy duty one. Many filters fit multiple cars, a quick look through their catalog confirms this. If available I would go a slightly bigger one. Less likely to clog and restrict flow but still keep up regular changes.

sailholic- thats a bit shortsighted. It's technology that has advanced. In the 50's 60's we had metal dashes or wood and now we have engineering plastics. If you care to read any of the info on filters you will see that filter mediums have also changed. So we came from no filters to cartridge systems and now spin ons- thats change. and certainly easily seen with cars. Anyone noticed that cars had no computers not so many years ago . Correlation- positve- progress

Nah, he's not shortsighted - he's being realistic.
The world of oil filters for the era that we are discussing has stayed fairly consistent. In the same time period phones did go from a shoebox to a creditcard size. Oil filters stayed largely the same.
This may come as a shock, but the formula for concrete is still the same after hundreds of years, and the recipe for bread is the same over a thousand... and get this, ice has been the same for millions !!

Back in 1990, you put a Z79A on a BP engine.Mr Morlock wrote:sailholic- thats a bit shortsighted. It's technology that has advanced. Now at 2014, you put a Z79A on a BP engine.
How is that for 24 years of technology advancements? It boggles the mind.

I will stay with the basic observation that technology has improved in almost every part of our lives and citing exceptions proves nothing. Ice was an interesting suggestion and perhaps slender has never heard of the ice export industry which collapsed in the 1870,s because of - technology! Even concrete has changed a lot as an industry.
Not sure of PRRs point- the designers may not see any need to change the filter designation but it does not mean the spec and performance is the same. Also engines may not be using the same oil specs with a 25 year difference and the tolerances and materials in engines change as well.

Re: Oversized oil filter
Dave just one other thing to watch is that Ryco don't list flow direction of the filter in their specs. Some filters have a one-way or drain back valve in them to keep oil from draining back to the sump on engine shutdown.
I have been caught out in the past on a Ford Courier. Identical size, thread, Mounting surface etc. Part numbers aren't that different and not looked at when its the 3rd service for the day and you think the parts guy has handed you what you asked for. Screw it on start it up and the light never goes out until the non return valve explodes and then the oil can flow... Fun times.

Re: Oversized oil filter
Z145A from SCA was $6 cheaper than the other filters with the correct thread for the relocation kit and quite a lot wider and taller than the Z442. Bigger holes and more of them. No idea whether this helps the filtration. Don't mind it saving me $6. Oil pressures went up a lot after the oil and filter change. Probs more to do with the oil being FUBARed than a bigger filter going on.
Thanks for all the advice from everyone.

Re: Oversized oil filter
I believe the oil pressure sensor is measured after the oil filter, so anything that improves the flow efficiency of the filter (ie something bigger with more surface area to allow more oil-filtered per sq inch) will show as more pressure. If you had a clogged old oil filter, it would show as lower pressure (until it bypassed assuming the filter had a bypass).

Re: Oversized oil filter
I used to buy the shop brand filters e.g. Burson etc but for the few dollars you save better to buy an established brand.

Assuming you can be 100% certain that your "brand" name isn't just a logo on top of the Repco/Burson shop brand - often there is only way to build an oil filter that meets specs of 20 years ago, and so to keep the price down, you end up having the oil filter factory making 10,000 filters, with 10% having a Mazda logo, another 10% with a Ford logo and the rest having a mix of shop brand names. Don't be fooled into thinking brands = quality.
