NBb had the biggest brakes. Mazda factory weights are unrealistic ( think poverty pack car, no fluid , no spare etc).

Abs came as early as na8 but only in Japan and only special / limited edition models.

NBb got more bracing over nba I believe, the SE certainly did.

Wheel and tire weight (unsprung weight) should not really change that much between models.

Torsional stiffness is over rated unless it's a race car and then your going to put a full cage in.

The 10th anniversary edition (10AE) is a 1999 NB8A and came standard with ABS and 6 speed manual transmission, Torsen LSD and Bilstein shocks. Brakes are NB8A size rather than NB8B. Kerb weight 1040kg according to the original spec sheet.

Trying to work out what's best just based on abs is hardly the right criteria. The NB range are all about the same weight. As far as models are concerned and purchasing always check the birth certificate ie VIN - the 8ab thing is not Mazda Aust id.

Depending on your budget don't discount the NC!

NA6>NA8>NB8A>NB8B>NB8C>NBSE
Left to right, basically power, rigidity & luxury increased, but so did weight.

NB8b had extra chassis bracing which contributes to the weight.
Full of fluids P/S, AC, AGI rollbar, full tank if fuel + turbo gear weighed in at 1160.
1100ish factory sounds about right for an nb8b

Wiki lists NB at 1065KG and that was the ball park I had heard before. AChen- 45 litres of fuel weighs about 35KG. - not sure about the roll bar. Whatever way you look at it an NB is not a heavy car. What other mainstream sports car was llighter. MR2 and Z3 were heavier. The NC was somewhat heavier but it also got a few more KWs. Mazda do not list kerb weight in the owners manual maybe because of variations between models and options.

Not a heavy car and far from a powerful car in non turbo form.

Far from a slow car too, Stock power levels are fine for 90% of people. NA6 might be a bit underpowered but power is not what these cars are about.

Iv got an NB8B and would highly recommend one. Stiffer chassis, underbody bracing, 6 speed, 1.8 vvt motor, ABS, they have the biggest brakes in n/a form from factory and pull up very well, they are just brilliant.

If you are doing all of this investigation etc with hitting the track in mind - factor in one other thing - ABILITY

I have a fully set up NB8A [stand under the bonnet] but a damn STOCK NA6 on crappy tyres almost to the canvas managed to beat me and the driver had never been on that track previous!

I'm not saying you don't have ability but IF you have this in mind and have not 'tracked' before then having the fastest car will not put you at the front of the pack

Good luck with your investigating

So surprised that nobody has mentioned your unholy and illogical fetish for ABS.

ABS does not prevent accidents. I know it sounds counter intuitive but look at the accident stats
and studies from insurance companies and there is no difference in the real world (as opposed to test conditions).

ABS means you can have the same accident but with no ugly skidmarks. ABS will not save you from your own fatal stupidity,

ESC, however, will save you from your own stupidity and saves lives by keeping you on the road. Airbags are good too.

Oh and if you are worried about safety don't look at a MX-5.

Just last week a Mitsu. Triton (aka typical 4wd) head on into a small Hyundai. Mitsu driver walked away. young sweetie in the Hyundai dead. Size does matter.

Yep the ABS is more for saving your tyres than it is your life. If it comes on you've really cooked it.

Abs did reduce accidents as it allowed drivers who didn't know how to brake properly to pull up quicker (but not quicker then a good driver)

The problem is people then drive closer to the car in front etc because they "know" the abs makes them able to stop quicker.
