NEW Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec

Postby Guran » Thu Nov 22, 2012 2:33 pm

I was browsing for info on Star Specs and discovered that Dunlop has introduced the new ZII Star Spec in Japan. They claim the new ZII Star Specs compared with the old Z1 are 1% faster around a 2.8km track. That's equivalent to about 0.7-0.8s around Wakefield Park, which would make them about equal to a proper R-spec tyre!

Google Translation of Japanese Dunlop website

The translation is dodgy as hell. This is one of the more interesting parts:

I phoned Garry's Motorsport Tyres in Sydney and was told that they're expecting their first shipment of ZII tyres in February. They're not sure exactly which sizes are coming as ZII, but almost all sizes will be swapping from Z1 to ZII. They comfirmed that in the 185/60R14 size, they're getting 12 tyres in Sydney and another 20 are coming for the rest of the country (mainly Stuckeys in Victoria). That's just the first lot of course.

I love my star specs I wish they made them wider in a 225.

Are you sure you pasted the right URL into the translator, Bryan? Were you on a news site at the same time? What you've got looks more like the front page of the Illawarra Mercury or, even more likely, the Newcastle Herald.

Any idea on cost for the 185/60/14?

Cheers

A price is only a phone call away.

Advice on alternate options for "S spec" tyres is in this thread. :D

I have heard good reports regarding the first version. So if the new tyre is even quicker, I might like to try it. But not until my KU36's have expired.

Still, how does the Dunlop compare with the Michelin Pilot Sport, which is a very good tyre?

I've got the Gen I version for DD.

They're a bit harder than I'd like but their grip in the wet is phenomenal.

At the last QLD Raceway when it rained, I wish I had my Direzza 205s instead of my Toyo R1R 225s.

Not sure what your intended usage is, but the old star specs were quicker than the ku36s around a track so the new ones would be quicker again..

I went the KU36, I got a price I couldn't refuse. I'll see how they go and may just run full slicks for track days.

I spoke to Stuckey Tyres in Melbourne (motorsport specialists) a few days ago. They said the ZIIs are proving to be quicker in the dry but slower in the wet than the originals.

I've been using the ZIs for a few years now. Good wear. No S-specs match them on a dry track, no S-specs or R-specs match them on a very wet track. Only real problem is enough harshness and noise to make them less than ideal on long trips.
