Hi Grant, I won't know until it's all said and done. However, I'm hoping for at least a 50kg differential. Keep in mind that I'm adding weight with the aero package components.

Cheers,
Danny

Danny slightly off topic but there is a rumour that the Plus open day is the 2nd Saturday in November, any chance of it being the first Sat of Nov so I can attend with my car? If not can I leave my car there so you can display it again?

Or will it be a reveal day for your build :)

Looking good. Why don't you cut away the rear half of the wheel arches to allow air flow? Or are you going to cut out bits later?
By the way, your mad for replacing the 1/4 panels with carbon fibre. Who does that kind of thing??
Side note, looks like I finally get my motor and bits on Tuesday. So might be able to get my car done by the end of the year. Will have to do an event next year together. 2 carbon fibre MX5's...

Also for people that think that it's a lot of work just making the plug. Your right. Those pics are just a snapshot of the work required. I notice you have smoothed out all the panel joins. Looks neat. I chose to leave them (mostly filled with modelling clay). Makes it easy to cut and join incase a part gets damaged.

Hi Mark, the 8th of November is only a pencilled in date....not concrete. Yes you can always leave you car. 8)

If it's a reveal for the car then it's 3 weeks too late for WTAC 2014!

It's being built as designed. I wouldn't want to discard the outcome of the CFD modelling. A good portion of the rear wheel arches are cut away to work with the rear diffuser design.

I'm not sure if you're serious or your question is tongue in cheek? Please explain. Front 1/4 / Rear 1/4 or both?

I'd be up for that! :D

There's many, many hours in getting the plugs right. If the rear section is damaged I'll be replacing it as a whole not replacing areas within. I've already had requests to go door to door racing (no idea what class it would fit into)...this is not the car for that sort of motorsport anyway. If anyone is going to damage it, it is going to be only me! :P

Danny

I was not serious, lol.

Look forward to seeing the car at WTAC if it's finished or not.

Reminds me, I better book the tickets soon.

September 2014 is here and it's full steam ahead!

The body moulds are well underway with the rear clip now finished and ready for the first carbon to be laid.

The next series of photos detail how the rear clip mould was manufactured. It is made up of four sections to facilitate the easy release of the product from the mould. There's other steps in between the images but nothing photo worthy.

"Tooling" coat applied.

LH section glassed.

RH section glassed.

Setting up of the split plane for the top and bottom sections.

Top and bottom sections glassed.

Releasing the LH section from the plug.

...and ta-da!

Releasing the RH section from the plug.

...and ta-da!!!

The top section released.

Just the lower section to be released.

Image

...and ta-da!!! From here the mould sections will be detailed and highly polished.

Here's some better shots of the rear plug with the chassis back on rubber.

The door outer moulds have been made and boxed.

...with the inside skin to be moulded next.

Now that the rear has been moulded the chassis I now have the chassis back at my workshop so that the outstanding fabrication work can be completed before going to paint.

Wheels off!

Time to destroy tens of hours of plug work!

Doors off!

Interior stripped.

Removal of some junk from the trunk! :P

The wound stitched. 8)

The plug work for the front end is well underway. It looks ridiculously tall....dimensions have been triple checked and it is spot on!

The inlet to the heat exchanger assembly. If all goes to plan the chassis will be at painted by the end of next week ready for assembly.

I can't wait to hear this beast of an engine again!

T-minus 31 days and counting to WTAC 2014.

Cheers,
Danny

Been waiting for ages for updates. The front does look very tall. Is the opening going to be that large? I am going to make mine much smaller.

The opening is way smaller...same size as I had prior. It just hasn't been boxed in yet.

Danny
