Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
I thought I would post this in the engine section.
I have a 1989 b-spec mazdaspeed Stage 1 import and I've heard the engines can have some differences to stock. I know it has a mazdaspeed ecu and headers but I'm unsure if other items are different.
Here is a link to my garage thread: http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=61734
The engine really picks up around 5000 rpm but I haven't compared to a stock car so I don't know if there is a difference or not. It certainly has a higher rev limiter and when I went to change the timing advance it was already at 14 degrees.
Does anyone know if the cams and compression are different to stock on all mazdaspeed cars? Is there any way to tell the cam specs by taking off the rocker cover and what would I look for? How about pistons, I suppose I need an endoscope or something...

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
Your lucky to own a b spec, I was lucky enough to get a drive of Zero's b spec when I first met him. What an experience, they are bloody fantastic, he had the engine rebuilt to factory specs so nice and fresh and it really liked to rev and pulled hard too, needed to keep reminding myself it was the 1.6l.
Pretty sure its got higher compression, different cams, different pistons etc but dont know the full details sorry.

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
I'm planning on switching it out with a fairly worked 1.8l race engine as this car is now being used solely for track and club events. Whilst the engine is nice it really doesn't have the HP I need as I'm competing against lotuses, Hondas and Ae86 which are all well above my power level.
It's a shame to break up such a rare car but I don't think it has much more value that a stock one which isn't much these days. In a few months I'll pull the head off and have a look and see whats in it. The extractors are a work of art.

Yep Roger (Zero00) will know about this
You should pick up another NA for track duties, Sell the MS as is

If you part it out Zero00's will be all that more desirable if he ever decides to sell

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
Thanks guys for the compliments on my B-Spec - MS11-20077
Yes, MS11-20144 makes it a Stage 1 from what I know BUT, I'm definately NOT a tech head!
What I do know is it came with S/S headers, full s/s exhaust system, mechanical LSD, the cams will not run in a 'normal' 1.6 - I think the compression ratio is 10.5-1 but would have to check and the pistons when replaced had to be virtually hand made, not a stock item off the shelf
Perhaps Danny [ORX626] can shed more light on it than me as it was his guys that did the full engine rebuild almost 3 years ago and the car has not missed a beat since then. It will rev easy as to 7000rpm and do it fast
It was Regie at an Open Day at Automotive Plus that picked the fact that the front strut brace was worded with 'Oneness between Horse and Rider'
Yes, it's surprised quite a few people when they have dríven/ridden in it as to just how much power it has - next time Regie is in Brisbane for an Open Day I'd better let him 'review' the car! That's if I can get him away from Danny's 20B NC
For the record, the Russian website claims the car was built on 5 September 1989, so next week it celebrates it's 25th birthday!

98kW Bruce or 130hp I think that calculates to - engine is like new, no rattles, no smoke and runs sweet as! It's a dream to drive and sits on 'King' 15 x 6.5 with KU36 tyres, KYB-AGX adjustables and King Springs
FTR it gets around 7.2 - 7.5L/100km with spirited driving - It's done 22,000km in just on 3 years since the engine was rebuilt, no expense was spared so it came back like 'new' and now has done 220,000km - having 3 cars I haven't dríven it much this year, so it and the 86 gather dust in the garage while the NB has all the fun!

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
it is basicly the hsv version of a commo.
mech lsd, bilstien shocks on lower 20mm springs, bodykit, high comp ratio. And the rest you know.
from memory i think it had a 236 intake cams and 250 degree exhaust cam and about 20 degrees overlap. 10.0:1 compression ratio.
max power 96kW @ 7,000rpm, max torque 136Nm @ 5,500rpm. so they were built to scream. i think they found an extra 6kW by raising the rpms ranges by 500rpm.
cos normal is 90kW @6,500 and 136Nm @ 5,000rpm isn't it?

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
The chassis is in great condition as its only done 120000km with no accidents. So everything on the car is nice and tight. I imported the car 10 years ago now under the 15year rule but its been off the road and garaged for 5 of those.
The car was a club car in japan and had a ss badge on the side stating the owner and car club. H Sonoda I think is the name.
I nearly sold it during the time it was garaged but this year instead decided to start using it for speed events. I have kept all items that were in the car so I can always restore it back to stock. I think though from this point it will stay a track car unless someone really wants it. My plan was to sell the engine, gearbox, diff, headers and ecu as a set with the id plate. Would be good to know what is in the engine though.

Re: Na6 Mazdaspeed Stage 1 engine
If your going to but a 1.8 race motor in maybe keep the 1.6 in the shed to put back.
You might be surprised at the value of them particularly in a couple of years.
