True that! I was actually surprised nobody commented on how he spent a day putting the air filter together... but then figured maybe it was as complicated as the wheel boss kit... the guy doesn't get a break with missing instructions and complicated components... !!
I remember doing mine. It took 6 minute and didn't read the instructions and the pics on the box pretty much surviced.

sailaholic wrote:Project R, I did mention it was far from ideal, the intake has only been like that since the police said I can't run socks. The current abortion is there because the reroute blocks the rest of the cross over (the reason I went to socks in the first place). I'm planning remove / redesign the reroute based on a different radiator but wanted to show i had done something if I met the police again.
Yeah sorry. I really should have put a simley emoticon thingo in my post to show jokes/sarcasm. I understand the MX5 has no great way to redo the poor coolent system it begun with.

While I'm still running a sock I'm hoping that having it removed from the direct flame path will make it ok until I mange something better.

Maybe I've missed a middle step, (and I can't see pics on the work computer) but why not simply use non-oiled filters?

Or is it a matter of there not being any decent dry filters available that will fit? (perhaps motorbike ones?)

The only non oil filter is a paper filter.

While I understand that it the reason for having a aftermarket filter enclosed. In Queensland their is not legal way it has to be. The popo can say it is to prevent airbox fires, but the DOT don't mention anything about oils in the approved modifications paperwork. I really see no issues with socks + itbs in QLD.

It was really at registration that I was asking (NSW). Not so much if you get pull over by the police.

It needs to be in an enclosed box if you are registered in NSW. For the 3rd time in this thread.

If it was more if a way to start your show and tell your probably better of starting a thread for your car in the garage section. That way everything is kept together for you.

Either way. It looks like a nice bit of kit.

My current (and far less then ideal intake )

You can't use one of the CX racing headers with how that cooling pipe over the headers. Is there any reason as to why you put the sock there? Firstly, it looks terrible - if you get pulled over the policeman would give you a defect because it is plain a sore on the eye rather than illegal. Thoughts of running a duct to under the wheel arch or front of the car? Also, is it legal to have exposed timing belts?

Has anyone ever had a no when getting a pink slip. Would the mechanics know the laws? Don't they just check the brakes etc?

Do what most people do. You swap the oem filter box for the aftermarket one when going for your slips. It's a 5 minute job before and after your check.

Yes the mechs know the laws. Some will pass it, some will not. You can always ask you mech beforehand.

The only option would be a to make up a backing plate and top plate to sandwich a small paper filter between like an old school "ramflo" style. This would still have the disadvantage of filters on your velocity stacks in terms of flow so used it as a prompt to get back to looking at a (economical) remote filter airbox.

Project R I agree but i figure they are always going to pick on it so I'll see if I can take it away rather then argue and make them go looking elsewhere.

But by puting it inside the Mazdaspeed airbox, you have done what they want. Just pipe it to somewhere not hot. I mean thats the whole point of the removable window on the mazdaspped airbox, to gain access to the socks.

Cos what you have done is no real difference to have 4 socks on each throttle. I still see a exposed filter within the engine bay.

I agree, the only advantage from this is the required flame path is much longer to cause ignition of the filter oil.

The point of the window is to access the velocity stacks.

They don't check anything, they just take your money and tell you that brakes are brakes and filters are filters. They probably won't even notice the pod as they are not familiar with your engine bay. Maybe you could teach them a thing or two when getting your pink slip, uno they are probably a bit old so I'm sure they'd appreciate your fresh ideas and lateral thinking. Give it a go and let us know! :)
