I used to own a set of 12pt sockets, and would (on occasion) round a nut. Paid a little more and bought a set of Metrinch sockets that grab the sides, not the points and have never had a problem since. With a little heat (from a torch for about $20) and if you first tighten before you loosen, almost anything will come off. Another trick is to have someone strike the head of the nut with a hammer whilst you loosen with the spanner - the shock will allow the nut to crack.
