Sometimes I have less hate for people when I learn they have mental handicaps.

Yet you come here telling everyone they are wrong, bogans, thief's etc etc and aren't happy when no one agrees with your point of view. Going as far to claim where all stupid people who don't actually modify anything and just sit around out cars and talk sh*t.
Given you've now turned to personal sledging as your first post in a thread I can only assume you are infact a troll and you've got tired of the stupid Sydney drive / fake brakes are ok / unequal length tuned header debate.
I have reported the above comment to administration hopefully the thread can be locked before it becomes a useless sh*t fight.
sailaholic, there is no way that I have called people ..."bogans, thief's etc etc .... or stupid" like you have said I did. Do a search and provide proof please.
Everyone's got an opinion and I've taken other's poster advice on board plenty of times. Mr Mortlock may be abrupt but I took his advice about HIDs in 5s etc and put off the install. The brakes are brakes discussion is valid and I'm buying the that CX racing header from the feedback that it fits. I'm getting it based on my research that the product should meet my needs. No trolling. emily_mx5 has laughed at a few questions from new posters ... maybe it's a different generation ... I'm just say it's not cool ... I don't think she is offended and if she was then I send my apology, it was not what I intended to do.

Ah the modern world, where we can simply throw out an "I'm sorry" without any thought and consider it as the great "undo" button.
Oh but imagine a world where "i'm sorry" cures all ailments by it's mere utterance, where one may be free to insult and offend at will only to say these magic words and undo all injury, where if the offended are still hurt by the words it's their ow fault "because I said I was sorry already!"
Dupain you are a farking moron, please ƒü¢k off.

Buck to the OPs question. Just remember the K20A civic engine was first seen in 2000. The BP-ZE engines from 323s/mx5 were first seens in 1990. There is 10 extra years of engine developement in the K20A. And considering the 90s saw massive engine advancements compared to any other decade. It's not surprizing the K20A is massive leaps and bounds above a BP-ZE

Thanks to the OP for the question. I had noticed the cranking and thought it strange compared to other cars I had dríven but gone no further than questioning it in my mind.
Thank you for all the explanations. Makes a lot of sense and part of the reason I love the MX5. So simple and and fun to work on (mostly).

Re: How to improve cold start timing in NA8
On the other hand I've got an NA8 and I've always loved the fact that it starts first time every time. It's one of the fastest starting cars I've known. Never, ever noticed any significant cranking. These cars are about 20 years old and it wouldn't be surprising that a lot of them need an ignition fresh-up: connectors, coils, plugs and leads, starter motor and leads, earths, sensors are all getting tired.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
