Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
Cars are getting old, its that simple, in the last 12 months I have bought a NB2B 2002 under 100ks, leather kit, spoilers, a nice car,one owner $10k,
probably a bit dear but!!! then a NC 2006 auto soft top, 53k for $15500, red a couple of small marks/dents, easily repaired,
again very nice car and had been for sale for over 6 months so I could neg a better deal.
So if I sold Scooter 92 na, 3 owners, with new race motor, 132000kms, new tyres, 3 set of race wheels, hardtop, all and sundry maybe I'll get $7.5k, dunno,
the market decides on what is a good price for condition.
So have they lost their appeal?? I think more younger people with small budgets will purchase these as they seem up here (QLD) to be the new Hondas,
You can buy a nb at the same money as a NA so maybe!!! Who knows???
Like any vehicle, priced right, presented right and in the right place at the right time, it will sell.
One thing I did notice when ever I'm looking at cars or even buses/coaches, it is amazing that people will ask for top dollars but won't clean and present a vehicle properly.
Imagine looking at a $400,000 coach that has lolly wrappers stuck down in between the seats

Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
all cars with high kms are had to sell.
personally there are alot of mx5s 90-93 NA6 versions with 200,000km+ and stoopid high asking prices of $7000-$10000 still exist.
what can you buy for $7K:-
1991 na6 with 200K+ on the clock - 2 seats, no a/c, no p/s
2004 mazda 3 with 150K on the clock, 5 seats, with a/c + p/s
2009 toyota corolla with 100K on the clock, 4.5 seats w/ a/c + p/s
personally i think mx5s have been overpriced for a long time. so its amazing with you see $10K asking prices considering what else can be had for similar money.

Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
Supply and demand. The demand and supply side can be split up into collectors and non-collectors. A collector will be willing to pay a higher price, however a person who wants to buy a track MX5 will not be willing to pay a collectors price.
A supplier who has there car modified too much will not appeal to the collector and will have an asking price too high for the person who wants a track only MX5. Plus the modifications may not be track orientated and will be removed.
Then again some suppliers are prepared to wait out for a premium price, this then influences others to raise their price expectations. But, the pool of MX5's for sale is constantly changing, if there are more buyers then the price will increase, conversely if the pool remains unchanged and there are less buyers the price will drop. But if there are more MX5's for sale into the same pool of buyers prices will be lower, conversley if there are less MX5's available for the same pool of buyers prices will increase.
as said by Tbro, the market will set the price. People will set prices depending on their view of the market and how much money/time/emotions they have put into the car. Emotional attachment causes the biggest skew in prices.

If the mods are done right and are what you would intend to do yourself then they can be a bonus for a buyer and also a good selling point. I remember when I bought my my Malibu 14 years ago it had a set of konis and a boot spoiler which I hated. I used the boot spoiler as a bargaining tool but love the konis. Because most mx mods are bolt on and easy to remove that is the way to get some money back. My 50 odd mods will be coming off someday!

Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
It's a niche market car as it's always been. Because of that it'll cost more then a every day A to B car which can be/is more feature packed/comfortable/practical/powerful/newer/safer etc
Having a quick look around car sales of what else can be had for about $7500 brings up some cheap performance thrills cars. Some Mitsubishi GTOs/Legnums, Subarus, Nissan Silvias/Skylines/300ZXs, Toyota Soarers/Celica GT4s/MR2s etc.
I guess lots of drivers nowadays want value for money & with that in mind the old MX-5 is a hard sell. It requires a particular customer.

I'm asking $3,890 for my 1990 NA with hardtop and cruise control. But I've got to fix it up a bit first. 265,000kms.

Fluges that sounds reasonable especially with a hardtop. Are you offering a roadworthy for that price?

Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
I recently sold my stock 1992 NA6 (long nose crank, 214,000km) with a hardtop for $3,900 (no BD rollbar). It certainly wasn't mint! Sounds like your asking price is in the right ballpark. Where are you advertising it?
There are less than half as many NAs listed on carsales now compared with five years ago. They are becoming rarer which helps explain why the prices are holding up. Condition varies enormously, which explains why some ask $3,000 while Concours low km cars are going for $15,000.

Market fluctuates. Prices should steadily appreciate once 30 years old.

Re: have na mx5 lost there selling appeal?
Agreed.
Still very common on the streets. Once they dissappear, and showroom versions are all that is left. Then prices will go up.
But thanks to zink plated panels and chassis, UV protected ABS plastics, most mid 90s car last forever. They ain't like 60s and 70s classics that rusted away to nothing, making the ones from the country unrusts and the only ones left.
