Both cars are in Brisbane. CFD is not cheap hence doing the aero without CFD. However, there is a lot of reading that can give you a good idea of what will and won't work.
Most of wish the we had the budget to commission Andrew to do an aero package like on Danny's.

I've done pretty much to the 5 as what I've done before. Wish I had come across your projects earlier, really interested in this mod now. Need more $$

The plan is to route cool air from the front of the radiator, over the top, and create a duct/shield that encloses the bonnet (probably using rubber window D seals) to give the mouth of the air box something to suck on (apparently it only likes cool / fresh air!)

I was looking at that option if the civic radiator didn't work. Plohl already had the rad so I decided to go that way first.
Do you think there will be enough distance between the bonnet and the top of the radiator for a decent flow.
Thought about where the filter will go?

As long as I make it wide enough, the cross sectional area will be similar as I'm only needing 3" diam equiv. So it looks fine.
Filter will be right in front, creating a box section behind the radiator, slightly angled down me thinks.

Was at MX5 Mania today to pick up a relay.
Noticed in the clearance bin there was a carbon fibre ITB air box (2nd hand). Looked in good nick and well made. Should have taken a photo. Inlet @ 7cm. Probably go for $30.

I played around with the first air box that I purchased for the ITB's and it is possible for it to fit!
Separate the filter, this allowed the locking nuts to be orientated to the top
However, with the PWR water/oil combo the filter box hits on the hoses, however it will fit. All that would be needed is to sikaflex the two parts back together. Although it still points towards the radiator ducting could still be made to get cool air from the hot side. Heat could be minimised by using something like this http://www.thermotec.com/products/14500-cool-air-tube-heat-shield.html

From the recent track day with the NACA duct I have found that the average difference between the outside and under bonnet temps have decreased.
Jap Nats----------25.8 deg diff at start
Time Attack -----19.8
Jap Nats -------- 32.2 after about 5 mins
Time Attack------20.2
Jap Nats---------36.1 in the pits after cooldown lap
Time Attack-----26.8
Jap Nats----------25.8 deg diff at start

The air box is not in, I'm still using the Pipercross dome filter. It will fit on a similar car if it does NOT have the same PWR radiator that is in mine.
The sensor for the ECU is located on the base plate that the air filter or box attaches to. The sensor that I have been using for data analysis is located on the outside of the dome filter.
