Sailaholic

Thanks for that info.
So I'm looking for Mazda Astina covers then. BF or BG both had the same B6 motor in them right? Looking at the Wikipedia page either model should be fine.

Ill go to another wrecker here in Perth and try again armed with this new information.

Thanks again

Mate that head/intake setup looks exactly like my 1987 Ford Laser TX3.

here is an example.

It's a large image so I left it as a link rather than paste a massive pic in here.

edit

Or it's Mazda Familia (323) sister

It certainly seems so, but it must be a very specific model/year as most of the pics I have found of the TX3 have a log style intake that points to the back of the motor not over the top, and the vast majority of them have the dizzy on the exhaust side of the head, unlike mine. Hmmm slightly oddball but a B6 head none the less.

Dizzy on the exhaust side is a BP motor not a b6 ;).

The astina in the link above with the log manifold is also a BP. Looks the same doesn't it :D

Age will be the key here. Check the 323 model at 87 and that will be what your looking for. Probably the sports / big engine variant of the time.

Both the above photos use a afm (as did the b6 1990-1993 mx5). The bp in the mx5 got an MAF meter instead. maf looks like a round tube rather the the odd shape of the AFM with the spring loaded door.

Ive managed to pick up a B6 mx5 intake. That will have an AFM ?
Ill post up a pic if this when I can. Its up the shed now, and its too cold to walk the 500m to the shed and wait for the lights to fire up.

Ill ring some wreckers in Perth tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

Thanks for the help folks.

If it's a full intake it will have a afm (ie all the plastic piping and airbox)

Afm isn't really needed / not desired if your going turbo with a standalone computer though

Yeah there are 2 TX3 models.

Old - 1986 - 1990
These were the 1.6L B6 engine ones.
This is the motor that your head came from.

New - 1990/91 - 1995
These were the 1.8L BP engine ones.

Now. in the old version, both the TX3 and the mazda 323/familia GT had the same 1.6L motor.
When the later TX3 and Familia GTX models came out, the BP motor had the BRAND on the rocker covers basically..

Thanks for all the information. It clears up the fog a heap. The pictures really make it clear. The early Tx3 motor certainly looks like mine.

I have rung a wrecker in Perth today looking for the timing covers. Hopefully they don't want drug money for them.

The engine in question is from a 87-89 BD 323 or KE Laser. They are rare as rare can be. Not many twim cams before 1990 found there way to Australia. I really would attempt to use something more readily available.

What would be the advantage of a later (more available) head? Just being able to sell the existing one on for more then it would cost to buy say a mx5 head?

i just re read the first post.

keep thermostat and coolent outlet location. much better designed than 90-97 mx5 version.

forget what i said about the engine. the heads are the same. i thought you were using the fwd intake. corrected after re read.

the timing belt covers are the same as the BP engines. find any BP engine from a 90-94 Ford Laser TX3 or Mazda Astina SP and pull off the covers. Otherwise search fordlaser.com or astinagt.com for parts.

The motor combo itself may be rare, but the B6 head (which is the bit I want) is not. Plenty of they about in wrecking yards, plus they Kia still used them in the Sephia up till about 1997. For my needs, as long its a B6 head, its good to go for me. The block, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds etc are just mix and match till I find a setup that works. For example, I'm using an MX5 intake and aftermarket turbo exhaust manifold, with a Kia Sephia thermostat housing at the back. That's the joy of a project like this. Its the learning and exploring till it all works.

Your right. There isn't any real benefit. One of the advantages of using the B6 head is it low cost and availability, plus it fits, which I personally think is the most critical point.

Now I'm chasing the timing covers. who knows which specific car that that will come from.

Thanks for the input guys

Any of the tx3 lasers mentioned above along with the equivalent year 323. B6 and BP use the same cover apparently.

If you don't care about accessing adjustable cam wheels with out removing the cover you could also get the mx5 bp rocker cover and matching lower cam cover. (Mx5 valve cover extends over the top of the cam wheels. I believed the Kia does the same.

i corrected myself about the head/intake.

the info you require is 3 posts up.

as for attempting to mix and match engine parts. have you thought about using a 97-98 laser/323 B6 head. solid lifters, higher lift, less duration. much better for chasing torque. dissy on exh cam. still got the normal water rear outlet, not stupid mx5 front one.
