just to eliminate that.

 so this has weirded me out. Was driving along today with the roof up, listening to the gearstick buzzing and humming away at different revs and thought, before I lose it and put the factory stick back in, I should double check its not the knob. So as I drove I unscrewed the knob and guess what? SILENCE!!
Totally bizarre since I tested this earlier and it made no difference. Since I dismantled and reinstalled the SSK, the noise now seems to be coming from the gear knob itself? Weird!

So the question is now, Since im still using the Factory leather SE gearknob, how can I overcome this? Is it the inner nylon/plastic thread vibrating against the metal thread?
I was thinking maybe stick a gob full of something like RTV silicone in the knob then screw it in place? The rubberised silicone might dampen the vibration?

compare the thread length on your original lever to the short shifter.

if the new lever thread bottoms out inside the knob the nylon taper at the bottom of the gear knob will not meet the taper on the gear lever.then you may get rattle on the shaft

or the opposite, if the thread is too short it will not screw in far enough, to maybe tighten against a weight inside similar to the problem i had that i mentioned in a previous reply

I had a look and the short shifter has a shorter thread length than the standard one by about 5mm. Will have a play around with this as I do want to retain the factory leather knob
