The 1.5 litre is based on this apparently...

I thought the 1.5L was simply the new 1.5L SkyActiv they put in the new Mazda 2 and the euro Mazda 3.
I also thought that the ND will be released as soft-top only... followed later by a folding hardtop. That's where they get part of their weight saving from.
Folding hardtops seem to be a dying bread.

I have a GTS86 [$40,000.58 drive away with tint] plus both an NA and an NB

I belong to both the MX5 Club of QLD and the 86/BRZ Club of QLD - in the latter the age demographic is very widespread, sure plenty with 'P' plates and also many 50+ [like me!!]

To me the attraction of the 86/BRZ is what can be done regardless of cost and there are many that were bought new for $40,000 and have up to $20,000 of extras and mods carried out

To date I have not heard of any 'repo's' but agree with Emily that there sure would be, as back 2 years ago they were really the MUST HAVE car regardless! I do know a few that bailed out before the car was 12 months old, figured the repayment, rego and insurance would cripple a few plus the constant cost of fuel when cruising almost 24/7

Unless there is an MX5 version that is drive-away at under $40k and isn't 'poverty pack' with steel wheels etc I can't see the younger generation being remotely interested - sorry, unless the can drive the 'PP' away for no more than $35k [basse GT86 Manual was drive away $33,700] they will stay away, leaving it to the 30+ age group to make the sales figures

Does it look good? Yea sure, I like it!

What the nd needs is a no cost electric engine - then look at them run out the door. It would also be a sort of halo model for mazda.

A reliable source told me last night the base model ND would be "somewhat" under $40K and there could be 3 engine options. Personally I favour a 1.5 turbo using the new Mazda 2 engine but doubt this will be offered. On the issue of price - we have been ripped off in this country ever since the car was introduced in 1989. Its true the current NC mostly sells to middle aged women and not too many of them, either. Mazda needs to rethink its marketing strategy.

Blesif how do you come to those conclusions? Firstly a "reliable source" is who or what-the same sources we all use like a speaker from Mazda who runs a spiel for a car club, or an exclusive breaking news from a car mag or a salesman working for a dealer. We can all make certain assumptions based on what is happening in the car maker place in recent years.

Re the assertion that "we have been ripped off".... since 1989" I regard that as at it heart wrong. It cannot be supported by any facts at all. One merely has to look at rrp for a range of cars which can be seen as competition and find that the MX5 was regarded as best value for money in its category. I would like to see one significant fact that supports an argument that we have been ripped off. No one here has the remotest idea including Mazda salesman as to what margin the car co makes then or even now. The overwhelming evidence was that the car was lucky to have ever been built because it did not have a good business case. If were about return and margins it would not have seen the light of day. When we say rip off how do we see buying a Merc SL or a Porsche or BMW Z something or Nissan 350/370 etc- keenly priced perhaps? Also being ripped off implies that you pay the money and regret it.

No one argues that competition has hotted up and prices are keen on a range of MX5 competitors though not all are equivalent e.g. WRX is a sporting sedan with fixed roof and 86 and BRZ also are tin tops as well. Mazda will respond with a different platform and also a marketing plan as well.

As far as who buys MX5 is concerned I don't think anyone here has reliable data or enough data to know the demographic. You can be guaranteed that the forum is probably at least 90% male. Anyway if it's middle aged women is there anything wrong with that? If a car co has a market they probably do not care who it is as long as it goes out the door. Personally I still think it will have the image of a sporty car and if the ladies like then that's great.

Morlock you are wrong in your assumptions about me and I find your tone insulting. My source is totally reliable. As well, I have lived for extended periods in two overseas countries where the MX5 is popular (UK and Canada) and I have travelled extensively in many others. I stand by my comment because I know it to be correct. The comparable (same inclusions) NC to ours is today around 38K in Canada. With discounts it is less. Canada, in particular, is line ball with Australia in terms of incomes, wage structure, economy, socially, politically, geography (talking delivery distances and population density), resource base etc. Its tax base is almost the same as ours and it practises world petrol pricing on the same basis as we do. No country is identical to Australia but Canada is bloody close. Don't try to tell me it takes its pricing from the USA - it doesn't. On my comment about middle aged women, that was from casual observation, not based on any fact and is open to challenge, so go for it.

This is starting to sound like a couple who are going through a divorce over an argument of how they will spend the winnings if they win Lotto...

Here's my best guess based on the recent failure of a Mazda marketeer to disagree with certain specific questions I asked:

There will be an acknowledgement of the effectiveness of 86 pricing.

1.5 with 88kW on 98 octane and similar spec to M3 Neo at under $40k.

2.0 with 121kW on 95 and similar spec to SP25 at over $40k.

Both soft top only.
