oil sitting in turbo inlet?

Postby Mr Sexy » Thu Aug 07, 2014 8:20 pm

Yesterday I got to work putting my aem cai on my se. While taking off a few of the hoses I noticed the insides were a little oily, the bend coming off the turbo was the worst. It was oily but not terribly, as I cut that bend off the turbo there was a little puddle of oil just sitting in the inlet of the turbo. Is this normal? I did get my finger into the turbo and tried to wriggle the shaft around, from what I could feel it didn't really move.

My Se is just about to hit the 200k mark and I assume it's still on its original turbo. The car drives fine, power comes on good (for a standard se) and it doesn't smoke at idle or while the turbo is spooling. So is this a sign that the seals may be about to go? or is it nothing to worry about?

Oil on the inlet side of the turbo suggests it's coming from the outlet/breather pipe of the factory 'catch-can'.

Check the plastic 'loopy' pipe from the MAF to the metal pipe beside the cam cover.
Oil at the departure end and no oil at the MAF end would confirm this.....

Sounds like you need something like this: http://flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=4536&parentid=0&stocknumber=36-90100

- for details, do a search for "check valve" here: http://www.mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php?action=search

Is there anywhere in Australia that we can get this part from? I asked Flyin Miata (though that was quite some time ago now) and postage was more than the item from memory :(

That's what I was thinking also, it's a universal part so some one in aus would have to stock some thing similar surely.

I just emailed MX5Mania and Ajay is about to order some stuff from Flying Miata and said he can order one for me too.
Shoot them an email and ask for one too, they might bring a few of them in :D

Speak to Repco, they'll be able to suggest/find something - it's just a one-way valve.

As per Lokiel, it's a one way valve. It's not a specialty part only for Mazda.

Either look at the usuals, Bursons, Autobarn, Repco, Supercheap, and see if they have one.

If not, go ask Pirtek or Enzed, they'll have something that will work, and I'd wager it being a lot cheaper than buying from overseas.

Just measure the ID of the hose you're fitting it to and buy a valve with that size OD.

Definitely worth a try. I however have zero faith in my local Repco and Supercheap getting the part right. Plus they are a fair way away

I think I've read of people using a PCV valve for the purpose successfully for the job as it does the same thing......

Did you check this one? :|

Would definitely confirm this is the source of the oil you're seeing.

A PCV would work perfectly.
Really depends on what temperature the oil is, and what temp the PCV can handle.

If the line is a turbo oil return I'd guess the oil is pretty damn hot.
