“We look at [the 86], but we don’t really say ‘how does ours spec up against theirs?’ or that sort of thing. They’re quite different cars!!!!,” he said.

Benders is either on a bender or is deaf dumb and blind.
I say again: I'm (still) the record holder for sales of MX5s in our dealership this year. I've sold 2, and that's 100% of our total sales. NC is a decent car but at 133% of the correct price for what it is.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Hope you're right, Dupain.
In Japan they offer the 86/brz with steel wheels and black plastic bumpers for the modders.

Would love to see the manual roof again as well.

Dupain wrote:$50K plus on road is way too much at presently.

Mazda is alienating a generation of drivers the opportunity to own a MX5. They all want an 86 - why? It's affordable.

You look at the age of the buyers presently - middle aged women.

When I bought my first MX5 in 1996, most were in their early 20s.
.

100% to all of that.

Mazda are also losing the opportunity to attract to the brand younger drivers who might later want to have Mazda 3s, CX5s etc. At the moment they buy 86/BRZ and later want Corollas and Imprezas.

Let's be clear these words in the post are from the motoring press including latest edition of Wheels. In another thread we already canvassed some ideas. I am convinced that the car will be sold in different options one more for enthusiasts sticking closer to LWS and the other to appeal to a different target group. Maybe if sales are slow for the true LWS then you have to order it. There is not the remotest chance the car will not be competing on price- it did not matter with NC as they were not selling and it's old.
The comments made by Dupain and supported by Dave don't actually make much sense. Try reading it . Just for a start you cannot compare sales of MX5 in 1996 to today and in 1996 the car was even more expensive. What has the comment about middle aged women got to do with NCs and where is the data to support it. " when I bought my car in 1996, most were in there early 20s" most what- is that women? And if the women did buy them in their early 20s then maybe close to 40 they are still buying them.

True.

1. Not true.
2. Obfuscation. And remember the MX5 had a segment of the market to itself then so the bean counters seized a profit opportunity.
3. Sales figures. My buyers this year average 60 years old. And hardly anyone at all is buying them, and when they do the transaction price is nowhere near list price. Mazda don't care as they get their full wholesale value but it does mean dealers don't even bother stocking them any more, which further reduces sales.
4. Not true. See 3. And note the bean counters are still trying to seize a profit opportunity that is no longer there because of the competition.

I paid under list for my sell colour (SSY) NC2 in November 2009.
Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?

There were only a handful of 20 year olds who could afford a new MX-5 in 1996 at the horrendous retail price then - and Mazda didn't sell many in Australia at that time. The only under 30s I saw driving MX-5s in that period were driving Daddy's car.

A large portion of young / P plate drivers having 86s is because you can get finance with next to no upfront money. A friend of mine works for a repossession company and said he's lost count of how many 86s he's taken due to non paying / can't afford it.
That changes the demographic, I'm not sure if such easy finance was available in the 90s?
Why are we comparing the old vs. new prices anyway?

The 86 comes in RC trim, would be so awesome if the ND had an option like that.

Probably reading too much into the wording, but I note the original articles states that Drive was told the ND model options would include "a compact 1.5-litre four-cylinder for the first time, as well as a higher tuned 2.0-litre petrol engine".
Note that the 2 litre is described as a "petrol engine", but the 1.5 litre is not.

The 1.5 litre is based on this apparently...

I am disputing the original claim of how it was (thought to be) not how it is. In any event, a P plate just identifies the driver and not necessarily the owner.

Sounds more like a poverty pack rather than bare bones but more options are welcomed.
