NB8B idles but won't go.

Postby wun911 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 1:03 am

My car is stuck just across the road from my house. It will idle really rough and really slow at ~ 600 rpm.

As soon as I give it gas it will reach 1000 rpm for a little while about 1 min then it cuts out and dies.

I'm going to change the spark plugs and leads to see if that helps. If not I will probably just toe it to my parents house.

Lately the car feels really sluggish like the hand breaks are on or it's running on only 3 cylinders.

Any other suggestions to fix it? I sorta doubt it's the cam angle sensor as it is usually a too hot will die thing. And it's like 11 degrees outside.

Cheers Wun

Seems like it'd be worth sticking in an ODBII reader if you know someone with one.

Could be AFM related.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Fuel starvation.Check for blocked fuel filter or failing fuel pump.

yes check that...and simple things like a kink in your air intake piping ,even a rag left in front of your air intake.
i did that once and got symptoms exactly like yours.

Changed sparks coil pack wires cleaned the maf with CNC maf cleaner new air filter. Canged fuel filter there was some sediment there but not that much, was changed about 30 k km ago.

No go now at all! it doesn't even start I think the light weight battery is starting to tire out. I have put it on a trickle charger.

I will call a toe first thing Monday.

I think it maybe the fuel pump. I dont think I can't hear it running when I turn on the ignition.

How much is it to replace a fuel pump including labour?

Good thinking get a tow and get it diagnosed and fixed.

i bought a pump from one of our sponsors for under $50 with free delivery and for a first time job took me less than 2 hours.
i imagine a mechanic that has done it before should only charge 1 hour labour.
by the way when i installed the new pump i could not hear it running when i turned the ignition on.

You should short out the fuel pump pin in the diagnostic box first and see if you can hear the pump running. A lot cheaper and quicker than replacing a non-faulty pump.

part of the point is that you can buy any number of items including a fuel pump and its not the fault ( as Garry points out) . A mechanic is supposed to do some diagnostic / fault finding checks. People also do not always have time to muck about and want their car back on the road.
