NA8A crankshaft angle sensor

I have had a few issues with this.Car would crank over sounding almost like it would do without plugs in place and then start but have a really terrible smell. Did this twice in a couple of weeks both times after being dríven for a while and then sitting for about an hour .

A few days later it dropped a couple of tablespoons of oil on the garage floor but didn't repeat that again.Oil was coming from the Crankshaft position sensor housing and the mechanic thinks the housing may be leaking rather than the CAS O Ring.Not sure why it would dump the oil and then not do it again if the CAS O ring or the housing were leaking, as you would expect it to consistent.Took it for a long drive down GOR at the weekend and it went perfectly.

Have had a couple of times over the last year where it has suddenly lost about 10 RWKW and thought it may be a faulty sensor,perhaps the CAS so have a new one ready to go in.

Has anyone had this happen? Any suggestions?

Starting problems can be so many things - hard to diagnose without more information.

I doubt the oil leak is related to anything, other than being an oil leak.

The CAS seals are a known weak point - place your hand under the cas, if there is oil under there it is the seals.

The smell might be a clue to the starting issues - what does it smell like?

Thanks for your reply.Hard to describe smell , strong almost burning oil smell and didn't last like you would think an oil on to hot surface would.The starting problem was only about 10 secs of winding with an unusual noise as I said like as though you were turning it over with no plugs in.

Have done some more research and will replace the O Ring and the crankshaft position sensor next week.Certainly the oil leak is very common from what have read.

I have had experience where a NB would take a while to start, like 10 seconds or so of cranking and it ended up being the fuel pump - it must of been on the way out and was struggling to provide the needed fuel pressure when first turned on and cranked. Test by turning to ignition on and off about 5 times (which should prime the pump and fuel rails) and then crank. If it starts much better, it could be fuel pump related.

The smell might not be related - is it always emitting an odd smell when it fails to easily start??

It has only done it two times,usually starts on the button.It has only dumped oil once although there has been a slight oily smell when using the heater for a couple of months so may have had a slight leak there for some time.

Will clean it all up and see what happens .

I have a high flow pump and a Malpassi regulator and all is well there.
