15x8 6UL gen4 - pre-order for October

Postby aka_juffa » Wed Jul 30, 2014 5:35 pm

I'm guessing that some of you have been holding out for the next release of the 6UL. Emilio has announced on the big forum that 949racing is taking pre-orders for the Gen4 15x8 6UL, and with new finishes.

I just got a quote of USD$636 for the wheels + USD$420 for shipping to Aus.

That much in freight you would think there would be an opportunity for a group buy using sea freight.

For that price, why not buy the wheels Chris Gough is bringing in? They are about the same weight, local supplier...cheaper once you factor in shipping and tax.

I'm with Apu. I love 6uls, have a couple of sets myself - but for that money and with the wait time, for 15x8 or 15x9, I'd be going for the Advanti Storm or the Konig Dial-In for flow formed strength, light weight, availability, and cost (provided you can swallow their design of course).

The only thing the 6ul will have over these wheels is the two pre-cast vale stem holes - which is a cool feature but it isn't worth waiting months and paying hundreds of $$ for.

Won't the new 6uls be lighter as they are now also flow formed?

To be honest I think the biggest thing is the design of the Konig aesthetically.

Right you are - when I read the specs, my eyes stopped at "low pressure cast" :)

And I like the dial-in - my set arrives in mid August (after waiting 6 months!) :)

I love the idea of the two valve stem holes - to be honest, I considered copying them when Works Engineering was considering getting into wheels. That said, they are only useful if you are planning on filling them with nitrogen.

Nah - I find them useful every time I come into the pits. There is always one stem that is more accessible than the other for the awkward fitting on my pressure gauge :)

I should have mentioned that I started this thread as a heads up only. My budget does not cater for new wheels at the moment.....having said that more than happy for someone to start a group buy, and get the price down :)

To be honest, it is probably cheaper to just organise a single set for yourself.

If group buying, you gotta have all the wheels sent to the one location. you'd be lucky to save 25% off shipping from USA, then you'd still have to pay for them to get to you.

The savings would be peanuts. And the GB hassles, GB time wasters and general extra time waiting would be huge.

Not to mention that a single set will most likely slip in under the gst threshold.
You'd be paying gst on the group buy.

Yeah didn't think of that. That'll add 17.5% to the purchase cost. So you'd need at least a 20% discount (wheels and shipping) to see any benefits. And even them it will only be little. 2.5% of $1000 = $25.
