Haltech IQ3 Display Dash Install

Instead of reading about tax law on the weekend I decided to start looking at how to install the Haltech IQ3 Display Dash.

This dash has a single cable that runs to the PS1000 and displays data. The single cable also supplies the power. Until such time as I get the speed into the PS1000 it cannot be installed, however I can do some of the prep work. Since getting a fuel level into the PS1000 is a bit of a pain I have decided to keep the factory gauge on the dash. The other side of the dash will be for the required idiot lights. Once I decide how far to recess the IQ3 in I will make a template mock up of how it will all go together.

To simply the idiot lights I have decided to keep the dash and gut it as I can then keep it plug and play.

To decide how far to recess the IQ3. Since I'm sticking with the donor dash I need to be able to run the cables to the dash so it may not be able to go back much further.

I just ripped the dash out, put an ally plate in, cut the hole out of that and bingo.

'Course I didn't have a fuel gauge either, did I ... After a lot of mucking around, I now run an electronic programmable gauge, so that is fixed.

Not sure why you want speed out of the Haltech, the IQ3 will give you that. Unless you are worried about speed cameras? (jk) Or is it a display only dash - I don't know if they come with all the gizmos?

I am also using a USM for some inputs (from the E8 days, when the ECU didn't accept much).

Have you looked at the video tutorials on the Racepak site?

It is the display dash so no GPS speed. I can just install the electronic sender on the 6 speed and run this to the PS1000.

Since it is road registered I do need to factor in the idiot lights etc. My current thinking is to wire the idiot lights back to where each matching globe socket is hence using the existing loom.
2 x green for indicators, blue for high beam, 2 x red for charge and handbrake, 2 x yellow for warning lights (oil/water temp) these are not controlled by the OEM dash. The other blue could be used as well but not sure what for.

The two dash buttons will be put onto the steering wheel. I have a bracket that was going to be used for a radio PTT, but since I can't get this to function I'll use the bracket for other things. Will need to have a coiled cable for the buttons. Good news I already have the parts to do a quick disconnect for the radio PTT mod

I thought about the fuel as well and just decided that keeping the OEM would be easier, at least for the moment. Keeping it plug and play is the plan, at least for the moment. My plans do change

I already have the Vbox Lite so no need for another GPS speed. Plan will be over time to swap out the Innovate data logging and replace with Racepak stuff.

Ah, ok. Are you datalogging out of the PS1000? Using one of the inputs will limit the channels available, but with a display dash you have little choice - unless you use an ap on your phone gps?

I have found that I am channel-limited, even with the four channels on the USM.

I would clean up the dash area, and put the lights together, in the centre console perhaps.

I put my programming buttons on a panel where the sunvisor went, they are out of the way there and I only use two screens, one on track and one in the pits starting/warming up. Does the display dash come with Datalink software - I use that almost exclusively for programming the dash.

I can't speak about the other Racepak stuff, as I don't need it for datalogging. Keep an eye on the Racepak forum http://www.racepak.com/forums/ , you can pick up a bargain there but it is low turnover there so you will do a lot of looking for not much action. You need to be careful with compatibility - there are two incompatible systems in their range.

I use innovate for all my data logging at the moment, a total of 32 possible channels (23 used). I then merge the Innovate with the GPS/Video from the Vbox using dashware.

Thanks for the idea on the IQ3 buttons, I will look into that spot.

I have the software as well as the programming cable so once I get the inputs into the PS1000 (speed, oil temp/pressure) I will set the IQ3 up. At the moment I will have to run 2 oil pressure sensors until I swap data logging systems. However I can remove some of the backup sensors (oil and water temp 120 deg warning).

Regards the physical dash - does the back white section come off easily from the black front section? I'm thinking I might replace my speedo with a similar aftermarket one in the same spot. I thus need to separate the sections and find room where the original speedo lived (in the white section).

Yes the black seperates from the white very easily. The clear part is another story.

Just make sure you wear cotton gloves when handling the guages as any oil from your fingers will be transfered onto the faces.

Fuel sender update.

Found a black box that converts the ohm signal from the fuel sender to a 5 volt signal. This signal can then be put into the Haltech and the Innovate. The IQ3 can then display the fuel and for what it is worth the Innovate can log fuel levels. So no need to keep the OEM guage on the dash.

Plan is to purchase the IQ3 Plastic Mount Pannel and mount the idiot lights on to this, simpler than making my own plate.

Well done! I saw the freight cost, and queried it, but they never replied to my email. As a result I went with a programmable gauge.

You might want to check out this Racepak forum thread for a discussion about the sensitivity of the readings from the sender, and there is a separate thread another Racepak forum thread dealing with averaging and sampling rates. Reading those made me happy that I went with the gauge, but even that shows one reading on the track and another in the pits. While it is near enough, and I am done experimenting, I will be interested to hear how this works out.

I will do, hopefully the blurb of "Dampening is built into the sensor so that the fuel slosh effect on the sensor output is minimized" will be true.

I have read those threads however no feedback on the ICM one apart from the freight cost to Aust. I did set up a freaight forwarding account, but they got back with a revised freight quote.

I will let you know how it goes.

Small update

Set about mounting the IQ3 on to a stock NA6 dash

Ended up getting a fake ABS IQ3 dash mounting plate. I had already drilled the holes for the stock dash

Hopefully in the next few days I will get the idiot wires hooked up and the button for the IQ3. Plan is to have the IQ3 buttons mounted on the steering wheel. When it is in Automotive Plus next I will have oil temp/pressure sensors wired into the PS1000. By the end of the year the IQ3 could be installed!
