My guess would be the NC.

NA6 had no internal release
NA8 unsure
NB8A has the normal wire/level type
NB8B I think has the same as NB8A

My NB SE had remote electronic boot access (unsure if that's standard) and also the wired lever.

My NA8 has the wire lever only. But I plan to fix that with a motor kit soon.

At least some ADM NA6 had the internal release lever.

Could have just been a later NA6 thing. Both the imports I've had significant dealings with were '93 models so you could be right.

I had a SNC na6 without and now long nose with the internal release.

I replaced a broken boot lock with only an electric release but then got a flat battery and had to jump start from the starter motor.

Years ago I did a write up on how to use one of these:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=LR8834

Still cant find the photos.

The 3 button early NB Mazda alarms can be modified to turn the 3rd button into a boot/trunk release.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

This is how it was done in my NA6 (I did it differently in my NB)

I used one of the Jaycar kits to fit an electric boot release with remote central locking on my NA6. Now gives me remote unlocking on doors and boot. It wasn't a particularly difficult job. I also fitted a switch in the center console wired through to the boot release so that I can open the boot from inside the car without the remote. Amazing how handy that switch has become!
