URGENT- Not able to select gears

Postby Dweezle » Mon Jul 21, 2014 8:04 pm

HI Guys!!

I have a issue that has stumped me and if i can fix it tonight it will save my ass!! :? :?

Xtreme HD CLUTCH with approx 40,000ks
NA6 suddenly stopped being able to select gears.
Clutch pedal goes down and starts to feel stiffer than normal.
With engine running can not select any gear.
Engine off goes through gears fine.
Start in gear and bunnyhops.
Hydraulics are all quite new and seem to operate correctly.

Grabbed a new OEM style Clutch today to swap in.

Removed the gearbox hoping to find a disaster zone but it all looks quite normal.
Only thing i can find is this wear on the Pressure Plate from the Bearing.

Image

Could that wear be the cause?
I only kind of get how the Clutch works
The wear is really all i can see that looks bad.

Here is the Disc,

and the Throwout bearing.

Any help really appreciated.
I could swap for the new clutch but do not want to spend hours doing that tonight to have the same issue when it is finished.
Thanks in advance!!

Hydraulics appear fine.
Everything was moving as it should.
The clutch pedal just became progressively harder throughout its range suddenly.
I believe there is an issue with the throw out bearing or pressure plate.

The gearbox with the car running feels as if all the gears are locked.
Like the gates are closed.
If that makes sense.

Try this,
Have car in open area in case it hops.
with engine off, select 1st gear with clutch in.
While keeping clutch in, turn engine on and keep clutch in. If the car starts to feel like it wants to creep forward, and you slightly move pedal and it wants to hop, your have prob with hydraulics.
Hydraulics will all feel fine while car is off.
You may just have air in the system, try giving it a good bleed before taking apart too much.

Start in gear and bunnyhops.

:D

I have done this.
It appears not be Hydraulic related.
The clutch does nothing, if you held the clutch down and then started the car it would behave as if you just started in gear without clutch.

The actual Pedal has an issue at about 85% travel.
You could feel it almost grinding/Rubbing somehow.
It felt like a mechanical block.
Almost like if you had the floor mat all tucked up under the pedal.

I will try and take the assembly to a clutch specialist during the week and see if they can trouble shoot the issue.
I have never had a clutch do this before.
From what i have read online it looks like The bearing, Pressure plate or even the spigot bearing can cause Disengagement issues.

It almost felt to me like the pivot arm was twisting and not allowing full travel of the Bearing onto the Pressure plate face.
Not sure if this is possible?

Haha..
I forgot my avatar is still that.
Sold the RS a few months ago.
Just been playing with my brothers NA.
He lent it to a friend and this happened.
I kind of needed it to get to work tomorrow but I've managed to borrow another 5.
Nice Black NB :)

You can have commitment problems with cars??

Yeah bigdog, that is what I am thinking.
The fork looks ok but thinking last night I wondered if maybe the pivot spring dealeo on the fork can wear or maybe was not sitting right and that allowed the fork to twist rather then push??

HEY Dann!!
I've been Renaulting for the past year and a bit.
Ran the state hill climbs and did alright.
Started doing super sprints this year but the really needed to start saving some cash for another reason.
Also I knew the RS gearboxs are on a limited lifespan and didn't want to replace that when it went.
Sold it to Clio fan and all was well again in the world.

Haven't bought anything for myself since.

Had the Malibu, didn't want to mod it, bought another,
decided to get out of 5s
then bought a cheap red one, after missing a 5, turboed it, remembered 5s were not practice for work etc sold the red one
bought the Clio as a dual purpose car. Upgraded the Clio, sold the Clio
back to playing (loaned) mx5s

Did I get the timeline about right. :)

Always seemed like you got out just after getting things mostly sorted. Ir mega squirt, turbo and mega squirt. Then the brakes and tires on the Clio.

All in jest, good to hear from you again.

Haha.
Sort of.
I never turbod the red one.
And I never upgraded the Clio.
Ran that as stock.
I bought the red one as it was cheap and nearly ready for the tip.
So I fixed her up to run some hill climbs but realized that a hatch would work better to carry wheels etc.

Also I had a silver NA first but that is now my brothers track car. The one with the busted clutch.

This is also over about 7 years.

But i am glad I have a fan out there.
Maybe I should start a Twitter feed??

Ahh right, thought the red one got a turbo, or was it just a head shave?

Stock Clio apart from the upgraded pads, wheels and tires yeah :P

No turbo, no head shave.
My little brother bought me a turbo kit but that was never used.

I ran uprated pads and ado8 tyres on stock wheels with the Clio.
