If the MX5 gets cheaper like the 86 then everyone would go for the MX5, and in that case whose going to buy the Mazda 2,3 & 6? Have you counted the amount of Mazda 2s and 3s on the road? Do we really want to see the MX5 be as common as that? Do we want it to become nothing special just because we want to beat the market? There are so many of us, including myself who looks after and loves our MX5 so dearly because it is a special, convertible and classy type of car. What happens if this car fell into the hands of someone who isn't like us? It can turn out that someone will drive the MX5 and will never look after it? Will you even look at that car again? Eventually the MX5 will become a car that doesn't turn heads anymore. I think the car is sort of like a mirror image to ourselves. It represents me. I would never want to see a MX5 turn into a trash looking vehicle just because it is cheap and people will buy it and not take care of it.

People still buy Corollas and Camry's, since most people don't want impractical sports cars which the MX5 is even more of since it has less seats and less storage.

I might be in the minority but I want to see more people get into these cars not less. It's sad on the days I go to the track and there are more 86's than MX5's there.

I don't get it?

I can't see why a MX5 shouldn't be priced in Australia....relevant to its competition....
As it is in USA.....

Some suggest whilst it is priced the same as Toyota and Subaru in USA....we should pay considerably more....because we always have

Sports cars are more likely to be looked after.....because they are generally owned by enthusiasts....they are an indulgence....selfish and impractical
Some of the older ones get more TLC than Newer ones.....so it's not just about price

I need a practical car....mazda6....
the mx5 is my toy....can't justify paying $55k for a new one,
But that could change if they were $35k

Love to see more on the road

Tesco what happen if the mx5 becomes such an elite club no one buys them and Mazda stops making them.

You didn't buy yours new so I'm missing why you think high prices is good.

The 86 is what the mx5 was in 89. Either the mx5 / Mazda will adapt or it will become the like one of the many cars the mx5 replaced in it's time.

I would guess maybe half buy an mx5 for the fresh air. The rest just want "inexpensive" rwd fun.

Even if Mazda aligned MX5 pricing with 86, why on earth would that stop sales of other Mazda models? E.g; "I need a mid-spec four seater auto hatchback for $30k. Although I see the base model manual two seater soft top MX5 at the same price, so I think I 'll have that instead?" Really?

And what would be the downside be if pricing was so competitive that every potential buyer of similar cars bought an MX5 instead? Surely existing MX5 owners are not the sort of people who would be upset by a lot more MX5s being around, especially when that translated into Mazda having enough MX5 dollars for extra product development without the need to increase prices?

I can understand the point or benefit of being cheaper, but I don't think the mx5 will discontinue just because there are another car has very similar feature and being cheaper. Have we ever compare our 5 to those lotus? How much are they selling? Did they get discontinue? I saw a lot 86 on the road but I don't think that would make me happy. Why? Obviously there are really a lot and everywhere, it is getting like a common thing. A very simple question. If you see at least 10 Ferrari or Lamborghini PER day. After a few months, would you still think they are spceial? If I have a family and I bought a 4WD, then I will look for a 2nd or 3rd hand mx5 as my toy, not a brand new toy. The only reason that I want to see more mx5 on the road would because I would be crashing a lot on the track and more mx5 that means more parts to repair my car.

Where's Edward Lear when you need "spceial" answers to easy questions?

There are some special challengers for all car manufacturers post GFC
Cars like mx5 have a very small market....and there are plenty of very Good low mileage low cost examples....so if you want a toy...$55k is a big ask

I've been doing some surfing comparing prices....interesting that the 86 isn't selling as well as hoped in USA....claim is too expensive, too underpowered for the price
Where have I heard that argument???

Yet I read an article here that if the 86 was a brand rather then a model if would be ranked in the mid teens for outright sales. About 6 months ago it outsold the entire Australian production run of every other Toyota "sports car" celica / supra / mr2 etc.

I think it also said Australia was consuming almost as many 86s as America which was completely unexpected by the company.

Somebody can call me out on this, but from what I read about the gt86 pricing; the reason they could get the figures so low was due to the partnership between Toyota and Subaru.
This allowed each company to offset the others costs. Basically it allowed each company to spend have the developmental budget they would have spent had they have made a single car in a single house.
Mazda on the other hand have been developing the mx5 soli for the last two and a bit decades now and still have to recover fev costs as well as profit at the end of the day.
Maybe the partnership with fiat could allow them to pull down prices but I very much doubt it.
Price has already been established at the highest people are willing to pay for the mx5, for the past 20 years.
Lowering that price point probably wouldn't be economical.

Interesting....

Pressures on...

86 not selling as well as expected in USA....basically at same price as a MX5

86 is going well in Australia (at basically the same price as USA) .....$20k cheaper than MX5.....which is selling very poorly

The Market has spoken....it will be interesting to see Mazda's answer

Hardly, at least judging by the number of middle aged ladies I see driving them.
