Repco Air Filter - terrible?

As a bit of a follow up on this one, my NB SE had a generic replacement filter in it when I bought it. I replaced this with a new generic filter (appeared the same but new) and immediately noticed an improvement of the responsiveness of the engine, subtle but definitely there.....
Now, unfortunately I have no idea what brands either of the filters were but they appeared the same and had the dark pink colour and densely folded design.

Yesterday I obtained a genuine Mazda filter specific for the SE (more free flowing than the standard one) and was surprised at how little difference it made.
Again there was an improvement, but not night and day, although I haven't dríven very far on the new filter so will reserve judgment until I do. :wink:

Nevyn72, you need to get out and drive more :p lol.
Glad it made some improvement.
I'd be keen for a monthly meet and drive with a few locals to help me rack up some kms if anyone is keen.
Re the filters, hard to say but I think my stock panel filter performs better under all conditions then my simota/mania inspired CAI.
CAI makes heaps of noise but I swear it lacks some low down oomph once warm.

2nd on monthy Syd meet.
Yeah, a lot of times the factory set up works quite well.
It's insulated from the heat...and on the mx5's it happens to have a very nice hole where the air is directed in. Just a good design...not that that is surprising.
