I also have a mazda6....almost bought the diesel, the one I drove got along very well!!

Old news

I reckon that will be the platform for the Fiat version, The MX5 will get a 2l NA motor :D

I prefer no turbo, otherwise it will destroy thr responsive of this car :D
And if I want turbo, I believe after market is better than factory turbo.

what about a turbo diesel....lots of torque= acceleration

Turbo is less responsive??

I'll be unhappy with a turbo if they put a tiny engine in it and ruin the top end. Would be cool though if they released a base model 2L and then a 2L Turbo or a 2.5L 'SP25'.

2.2 turbo diesel auto with paddles for me then please. And an LSD to help with all that lovely torque.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

Nah. Diesels are no more scary than any other modern engine.

I would be very happy with something 1.6-2.0 and turbocharged. The latest generation turbo cars are really something else...small capacity engines that through a process of black magic and voodoo make the power and torque that 2.0 engines used to make but with half the fuel consumption. There is no good reason for the new MX5 to be anything less than a 1.5l turbo engine with 150KW, 230NM and capable of 7000RPM with power and torque spread from 1800RPM.

Because facts, correctly presented and in context, help further constructive debate.

Some examples here:

Diesel weighs 70kg more.

2.5L petrol 250 Nm @ 3,250 rpm. 2.2L diesel 420 Nm @ 2,000 rpm. Diesel has 68% more torque at 60% of the revs.
2.5L petrol 138 kW @ 5,700 rpm. 2.2L diesel 129 kW @ 4,500 rpm. Diesel has 93% of the power at 79% of the revs.

I make the 2.5L petrol and 2.2L diesel comparison because it's the only possible petrol/diesel one within the Mazda range.

Mx5 isn't about torque or fuel consumption or power at low revs...

The sound and revs and driving experience is what the car is about.

I've got a cx5 td for my daily.
Yes it is more comfy and uses less fuel than my na6.
But that is not what an mx5 is about.

Td engines are horribly agricultural things.
Would ruin the enjoyment that a somewhat revvy light mx5 brings.

Someone mentioned responsiveness of an NA engine over turbo... I assume that should have said throttle response... And I totally agree.
Sure no power but also no lag. Each mm of throttle movement equals engine response.
