MX5 SP standard boost

Postby bmchi » Thu Jul 10, 2014 12:13 pm

Hey guys,

new to the forum.

I have an MX5 SP and just wanting to know what the official stock boost levels are, all the articles I've read are stating different figures, anywhere from 5-8psi. maybe the boost was not standard becuase they were not mass produced?

Im running a boost gauge and it hit 0.4 bar, just want to make sure everything is correct as far as I know the engine and everything in the engine bay is all standard. The vacuum line from the intake manifold to the bov piping seems to have been changed but im not sure if its running the $2 T piece mod, will check it out when I get home. It's a Greddy boost gauge, not to sure how accurate this is.

Cheers

that could very well be me, love the things we are going to get married and spend the rest of our days together :P

so it must have had the 5psi wastegate changed on it, would that mean the turbo would have been replaced under warranty aswell? :o, wonder why they lowered the boost :(
hmm time for a boost controller?

Welcome.

Think the boost was lowered to avoid bending the rods, which were standard MX5 issue.

These changes were random, so there's no guarantee the turbo was changed, or that the boost was intentionally lowered.

A Mazda dealer might be able to tell you what was done from your VIN.

$43k for an SE 10 years ago! For that money now you could pop a turbo on a new shape Mazda 3 SP25 GT. Even an Astina auto is less $$$. Is it that cars have got cheaper here or were SEs and SPs overpriced?

I know the NA6 was just over $29k here in late 1989. And the early 1990s Neo Green LE was apparently just over $38k, which makes the SP seem cheap a decade later: http://home.mira.net/~redback/mx5/mileston.html

Ha! For that you could have an Astina auto with turbo and radar guided Exocet missiles (which is how I sometimes describe the new-fangled cruise control).

Welcome and congrats!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
