that is a great write up

I have been doing club track days for a number of years and am very interested in trying something different. I had thought of supersprints but a lot of what i read is pretty negative, poorly organised, lack of track time etc. I like your point regarding the need for it to be fun and affordable and is probably the reason i have stayed with club days up to this point but would like to make the jump

I have not really looked into the rules re car eligibility but from what i have seen there seems to be a fair bit of fredom? My car is an SE but has been modified and i don't think would fit within many CAMS classes very easily which is a big reason i like the look of the MX5 cup. Would i be right in thinking my car with oversize pistons, aftermarket manifolds, turbo, ecu etc would be ok to run assuming all other things like safety requirements are met? I would also be interested to know what tyres most people use

Yep, just get your car log booked, get some safety gear and come and race. The MX5 cup runs on time-based classes so you just slot in to where your times fall...

I'm not the best qualified to talk about the technical side, but as Zossy said from an MX5 Cup perspective it is a time based class system. So you run with the people that are doing similar times to yourself. It's one of the better things about the MX5 Cup format, you don't have to build a car to a set of rules then wonder if someone is bending those rules, you just race next to the people that are doing similar times, and so far there has always been someone to race with. So that means the only real requirements are the safety things you need to do to go racing. There's some great information that has been pulled together by the Cup organisers on the MX5 Club NSW website:

http://nsw.mx5.com.au/motorsport/other- ... ort/racing

Any specific knowledge gaps that you find after this stuff, the committee is great at answering (I had tonnes of questions before I started). Put them up either here on the forum or email someone from the committee (deets on the MX5 Club NSW website).

My two cents is: get involved. In my experience, its about a 30% jump up in terms of effort, money and commitment compared to track days but 100% more fun. It has this mystique around it because it's 'racing' but its essentially the same procedures that 80 odd people turn up for each club track day, but the rewards and the buzz is off the charts.

What makes me excited about this series going forward is the people turning up to race. Enthusiastic and supportive, and no d'heads!

We have started discussions about the schedule for next year so now is the time to put the ideas forward.

Great posts Stu , Craig and all the others, the clean quality of racing this year has been amazing , last weeks all british round saw some of the best racing all year 3 races 3 different winners , the last race saw 4 cars going door to door with many lead changes before Chris prevailed (Nice drive Chris) importantly no paint was swaped.David and Stu had the drives of the day, great to see 2 new competitors from this year progress to the front , Chris also new this year and always in the mix. As Craig said the people involved are a great bunch , the social aspect of the race meets is as good as the racing I would encourage anyone on the fence thinking about having a go DO IT you'll never look back.
We have had prelimanary discussion about the 2015 cup with in the commitee , with the oportunity to do enduro event next year aswell a maybe venturing to QLD to race against the caine todes, some super high quality MX5 race cars up there with quality drivers I personally think it would be awsome but it would be interesting to get feed back from competitors , also Queenslanders your feed back on how keen you lot are to join the fun would be good.

Its good to see more and more people getting involved.
I think it would be good to make sure people know that, although it is racing, you don't need to be running 1:07s around WP to compete and to come have fun.

Not everyone has the money to have a car that quick, but there is still plenty of fun and good racing to be had further back in the pack with the slower cars.

Absolutely. There are some very cheap cars out there right now that are begging to be bought and raced - Lou's Greenie, Chris's car, Nathan's car - it's cheap thrills!

OK,
Not sure if anyone is still members of PSCRA or PSCRAQ or Prodsport or whatever you call it down in NSW,
but this is an email that came today or part of

""Hi All,

We have received a call from CAMS asking if our category would be interested in providing a support category for the V8 Supercars scheduled for the 1st-3rd of August 2014 at QR…yes that’s correct the beginning of next month.

The brief details (but yet to be confirmed) to hand so far are:

1) We will be allocated garages within the enclosure

2) Entry fee will be $100

3) Practice and qualifying Friday

4) 3 Races over the weekend ""

So its up to you lot, me I got one well and truely rooted motor and mumma bear won't let me race the Merc (buggar)
You will need a CAMS license etc etc

I can only speak for myself, but there is no real reason for me to hold a CAMS license, let alone be a member of Prodsports.

Cool opportunity though. I wonder what happened to the V8 utes, Porsches, Masters Touring cars, Aussie racers, etc?

Funny thing that at the V8s round at QR, prodsports had a full grids with reserves (mainly GT's and all QLDERS) but this round isn't full .

As Lou will say WTF are those other cars doing in there??????

I don't race in PSCRAQ at the moment, and the way things are, "if" I stay with the MX5 I won't bother racing as with lots of others, the old attitude of "help out a mate and go racing for fun of it" is well and truly over. I have been told that some members are now talking about MX5 "only" racing but they don't want to hurt the club but are not enjoying racing with the super fast cars either. Maybe it is time that MX5 CUP came up and I'm pretty sure it will be 99% ex or current 2f cars running anyhow. From what I've seen from down south and what is up here I recon there would be some bloody good racing up here, especially Lakeside ( AASA track) So Daniel I think it would be a good idea and I'm pretty sure you would have a full grid. The biggest problems is 99.9% of MX5 racers don't come on here, only me :) .

Terry, just I.M.H.O. the only way to have gentalmen  racing is to set a minimum lap time, ( this I believe is the only thing that works). The way I look at it, it's the only way to stop the cheque book racers in super cars.

Example would be a 60 second lap time at Lakeside, thats it.... Break out once, 5 second time added, do it again DQ. Plus no backing off on the straights etc.

It's just no fun spending sh*t loads of money just not to get lapped.

Looking forward to seeing some good racing at Morgan Park. Unfortunately I don't have a cams license so won't be driving. But I would encourage as many as possible to join in on the 1hr at QR on the 18th and 19th of October. Limited class driving would be good, but since many MX5 guys don't race we don't have a lot of choice. Personally I don't mind who is in front of me. I just love racing.
