Urgent! How to remove diff output shaft!!!

Postby revhead » Sun Jun 08, 2014 1:49 pm

How do I separate the output shafts on the na8 diff? Shop manual says to pry them out. I can not get it out.Image

Well this seemed to be quite effective with my car..... But I wouldn't recommend it! :(

Are you prying from 2 opposite sides? One side won't work because you'll be levering it out on an angle. Two big flatblades, one on either side should work. I had the same problem getting my NB axles out, just needed to have the two prybars further around from each other

a big slide hammer(reverse hammer) would work but obviously not readily available...need it custom made to bolt to studs

I'm sure at least one of the attachments here would work, if you're the tool-collecting type of person https://www.tradetools.com/products/664

Lever it out with a crow bar. Should click right out.

Got it. Cheers guys. Ended up using two crow bars and just giggling them at the same time til it gave way :) diff went in, but now the left output shaft side has a leak :(

This rings many very large bells in my head. I swapped my diff, knocked a new axle seal in crooked. Leaked. Replaced that, then the other side started leaking. I had torn it while I was originally trying to get the axles back in and wasn't sure if I should hit them harder or not. So I had to drop one axle, twice, cos the second one didn't start leaking til later.

I didn't touch the seals on my diff. I got the diff as a complete unit, all I had to do was put my axle stubs in (which I put in very gently, tapped them on with a rubbet mallet and a large socket)

Yeah that's why most places will recommend that you do them before installing a second hand diff. They leak at the slightest provocation if they're old, removing an axle from them breaks the oil seal around the outside and they don't seal anymore.

I know, rookie mistake. I should done the seal at the same time! I am really tight on time at the moment with exams for uni so I may just have to get a shop to sort this out for me. Hopefully they don't charge too much to replace both seals
