It is very refreshing to see the 'mindless optimism' that sustains some people, really gives a perspective on how the world works.

This sounds like my worst nightmare.

Damaged the K frame and bent RH steering on my car back in September, took me months to get the car fully repaired because I did it via process of elimination then finally came to the point where I knew I needed a new K Frame.

Yours sounds much worse, I would definitely not be touching this myself. Leave it to an experienced Mechanic.

If this is the same friend who junked the gearbox and then apparently semi-repaired it, what are the possible errors in this much bigger job?

Where is the car when you are standing underneath it and how is it supported?

I think that you might have mistaken. I believed I have said many times that it wasn't my mechanic friend who messed up the gearbox, it was a guy who work with him there. Also it is a proper mechanic work shop so I am definitely standing under the car while the car is secure on the lift. So please don't say that my friend did a bad job or whatever, he did fixed my gearbox and it has no problem at all even till now. The gear stuck problem that I have mentioned wasn't after his work, it happened when I bought this car and I have asked about how to fix it a year ago, but it didn't work out, so I asked again but somehow it was a awkward timing. So you guys misunderstood the gear stuck problem was caused by him. So please stop judging my friend's skill.

And lastly if you are wondering why did I want to fix the car by myself so badly?
The answer is because the car that I own is a MAZDA MX5.

You gotta draw the line somewhere though. I mean I don't know your individual skill level with cars etc, but if it were me I would be letting someone I trust do the job (not me).

It's your pride and joy and you want to respect it, not force yourself into because you have that thought in your head that it's your responsibility to fix it.

Anyway, 2 cents deposited.

Good luck and if you like keep the forum updated, time or history will prove you right or wrong. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, in fact I hope I am.

As has been said make sure the person doing the work is skilled and is prepared to give a warranty on the work and not a 30 day or 30 paces warranty. If there is no charge, then you cannot expect a warranty in addition this also implies that it will be done around paying work and could take longer as well as possibly a lower standard. No responsibility, no care.

When I hosted a dodgy day one of the 'tasks' did not go well and whilst I could have wiped my hands of it, I went out of my way to help get it fixed. In the end the repair was more than my skill or knowledge so I offered (accepted) to tow it (at my own time and cost) to MX5 Plus to have the work done properly. What the person does not know is that I contributed towards the cost of the repair (MX5 Plus bill) as the reason it was being done on a dodgy day was to save cost and make use of other people's skills. Hence the person concerned did not have the resources to do it t a professional workshop. Plus he also wanted to learn new skills, which he (and others did).

We all learnt that never attempt a clutch change on a dodgy day with the car on stands and have a spare master and slave available :) Plus, how to bleed hydraulic systems properly! Notwithstanding it was a fun day, but I digress.
