I dunno either, Terry. I just checked back. The set I used have a Cr plated top ring and these do require honing first. Does anyone still make sets with plain iron top rings?

I haven't done it for years though but I was wondering about it. The last rebuild on the NA8 included a hone and it's never made the compression figures it had before and I'd put that down to lost bore metal and honing residue, even after I went OCD cleaning them. I'd been kicking myself about it because at 175,000 the bores still had signs of the factory honing marks.

Was the bore 'Plateau Honed'?

Phil,
Try Rockauto, enginetech or sealed power
DISCOUNT CODE: 2262084820701331 worth an extra 5%
I tend to think your problem with rings maybe lower ring tension that a lot of manufactures use now,
great for economy and good at the start but tend to drop off fairly quickly.

ACL do make rings sets but not sure if they are still available, due to factory closing down. Might be worth asking.

I hadn't heard about ACL closing. That's a real shame.
