Re: MONDA - the Honda Powered MX5
This is fantastic. I own both a nb8a and a 118kw VTEC powered civic. Hands down the civic's engine is a lot more responsive, fun to drive and even more reliable when compared to the BP motor, so what oztrackdays is doing is really the best of both worlds. I'll be following closely as I would love to have a k20/24 powered mx5 for track duties when the time comes.

Re: MONDA - the Honda Powered MX5
I dont see the point in carbon door cards. You dont need door cards.
Waste of $$$.
Carbon hardtop or fastback would be good. Obv the airbag system.
sound deadening removal
some lightweight but wide racing wheels.
and unlikely but Titanium exhaust system.

Does anyone care about engine authenticity / pedigree ?

I don't recall asking you what you wanted, but you did ask for advice on how to cheaply
double your current power output http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=63432
So you can't be all that enamored with the 80's era lump of slow under the bonnet.
Such heritage and pedigree being the HOT STOVE version of a Mazda 323/Ford Laser engine

it sounds like you seem to think that mazda engines are somehow superior to honda engines?
if so i feel you are both misguided and delusional.
either way no need to hate up this thread of awesome.
show me an na bp that can make 150wkw with bolt ons and a tune.
98 evo gold - rotrexed and loving it.

It has to be registered so door cards required
agree on fastback
Can't remove airbags and stay registered
Titanium exhaust is an option.
Read the details before hating on suggestions.

Titanium Exhausts are great we did consider them but 8400+ rpm the extra noise would likely get
me pinged at Phillip Island and Lakeside so we doing a street legal muffler with cat, mid muffler
and normal resonator muffler to tame the noise enough to actually use all the tracks.

But Ross, honda is the power of dreams!
Seriously though... What's your issue?
Is it that the honda is lighter?
15 years new in design?
Has two cam profiles?
Has a wider range of cam angle variation?
Is more fuel efficient?
Has fewer thermal management issues?
Has bigger displacement?
Makes twice the power of bp?
Dosent need a timing belt change every 100k-km
Has an extra 1-2 k revs?
Or is it,
It's not original factory fitment (well neither is aftermarket cams, super chargers or turbos)
It's got a honda badge on the engine?

Re: MONDA - the Honda Powered MX5
To all the 'haters' let oztrackdays spend the money the way he wants. Oztrackdays has a plan and is working towards that, it needs to be road registered hence it must still retain certain features. I made the mistake of trying to build a track car that can be used on the roads, this is not possible, so it is now a road registered car that can be used on the track, a complete different way of thinking.
There have been enough haters for my build, like 'expensive horsepower', 'turbo is better', 'looks fast but is slow', 'waste of money' and many more, simply I could not care less for what other people think. I'm more than happy with the end result and I know some other people who are very proud of their involvement with the engine build as well as very suprised at the results people. However I do care and respect the advice that has been given by people that took the time to give an informed decision or even question my logic! To the haters, I so much enjoy proving you wrong and exposing your lack of knowledge! Sorry to hijack your thread.
I say goodluck with the build and make sure you think outside the box.

Re: MONDA - the Honda Powered MX5
The logic is that this mod makes so much sense in the long run - similar power to a turbo car (on a stock engine), and cheaper than a built MX5 engine, definitely more economical than a turbo...and so on.
Sure the outlay is high, but the ongoing costs are significantly lower.

OK, regards weight loss;
There is a very old thread (a couple of years ago) which discussed what could be chopped off/removed. It pointed to a website in the US which a guy removed heaps of stuff and weighed it as he went. I think he removed the maximum possible.

This build is awesome, watching with interest!
Great work on having the balls to go ahead and do this!
Just look at the K swaps in the Elise's, I have a mate with one, albeit a supercharged one, it's doing sub 59 seconds around wakefield

Re: MONDA - the Honda Powered MX5
So given the starting point is a NB8B and it's going to be road registered what bracing are you adding for the finished product? Will there be removable door bars?
Will you be seam welding the chassis too?
