I sure was grinning. I had pushed it a bit the lap before and was going to back off after crossing the line, then I saw the time of 58.2 come up on the lapciever so I kept the boot into it and thought I would go that little bit harder, the 57s bracket is not far away.

When I crossed the line and saw 58.09 I found it quite funny and entertaining, only a tenth off a 57! Nevertheless I was very pleased with the time. I was not expecting to get anywhere near that time in those conditions but the car felt good and it just seemed to get there! :D

Well done too Matt, very nice times considering the conditions. I see the Lakeside timing system decided to taunt you too with a +0.09s off the next bracket :lol:

Same for me too Tim, missed the next zone by 0.1248, of course my excuses are:

1. They used the wrong calendar
2. The sundial failed due to lack of sun

I should clarify what that means - years ago, and I mean YEARS ago I used to do sprints at the Hume Weir Circuit near Albury NSW, I was so slow th standing joke was they while everyone was timed with stop watches etc I was timed with either a calendar or a sundial!!

Really that was a b*tch of a track, absolutely NO fun in a stock 180B then 180BSSS

Regardless which device you are being timed with just remember what some people seem to forget, we are just doing this for fun and it seems like you are having heaps!

Just a small update. I will be running at Japnats at QR in a couple of weeks so I have started getting things ready. Thankfully I don't need to do anything major, just some superficial things.

Over the weekend I took the front spoiler off and got some white paint on it so it looks a little tidier.

I also got started on the boot lid. I made this up a little while ago by laying a couple of layers of fibreglass over the oem boot lid and peeling it off. I had only got time to put some "temporary" rattle can paint onto it.

Since I was in the paint n panel frame of mind I decided to get started on prepping it for paint. I got some body filler spread over most of it so that I can make a start on smoothing the fibreglass texture out a little. Hopefully I will get it finished off this weekend.

One of the last things to get done before the Japnats Timeattack trackday was to apply some stickers to help the car look a little less generic white MX-5.

The day went pretty well. I had issues with very bad oversteer pretty well all day but other than that the car seemed to run well. In the end the best time I managed was 58.8 on the QR Clubman circuit which I was pretty happy with considering I did not feel very comfortable with the car's setup.

Looking at the data from Racechrono I was a little off what would have been a good lap. I will try to get some photos from the day.

My time was just good enough to crack into the top 10 which meant I got to take part in the top 10 shootout later that afternoon. I went a bit slower in the afternoon, I think it was a combo of everything being cooler, plus driving tentatively. The last thing I wanted was to turn the car around with everyone watching. The car had been sitting for 2 hours, then we only had a single lap to warm things up again which I think was a little silly.

I just pulled the rear brake pads to replace them before next weekend, they were looking a little worse for wear. I also ran out of front brakes a couple of times one of which almost landed me in the gravel trap at turn 6! The brakes would probably cope with some better pads installed which I will try if I get a chance. I have been pretty impressed though with how well the QFMs have been considering the pain I put them through. I think I need to focus on getting something bigger sooner rather than later.

Oil is changed and discs have been removed from the car and cleaned ready for new pads to go in. Hopefully I can get them tomorrow and give the rest of the car a once over ready for Lakeside Timeattack this weekend!

Tim, looks like the pads are cooked and not replaced early enough, but just seeing photos hard to really know.

If you were happy with the performance and cost use the same pads again, but also measure the heat on the front and rear rotors using the old coloured paint dabs and see how hot they are getting, match the pads to suit the heat range and you will probably cure most of the other issues you are having. The brakes you are running should be able to cope with a sprint day of 5 lap sessions with ease. Racing, it would be worth upgrading the rotor and caliper/pad sizes to cope with 10 lap or more sessions.

You generally want to have the softest pad that works at the correct temperature range to get the best performance from them. It is scarily easy to "overbrake" a car. Remember also, bigger brakes is generally bigger unsprung weight too.
