It'll NEVER be "finished"!

I sent a PM to Okibi recently regarding this. After the engine rebuild and run-in, I originally planned to upgrade to Fab9 COPs, a Fab9 350hp intercooler and ID725 injectors and get the car tuned professionally. Out of the blue, the rarely spotted NB squaretop appeared For Sale on the forum so I nabbed it and when you have a squaretop you're almost obligated to get the Skunk2 throttle body too. I've been in an "upgrade spiral" which will eventually result in a potential beast but at the cost of missing track time - and driving in general :(

So for now, I'm living vicariously through you guys' track videos/photos/stories - so please, keep them coming.

The upgrading will stop, however it will transform into tweaking. Following some feedback from Doug on the car its straight line speed needs to be improved, no issues with corner speed, grip, brakes or handling. Comments were, based on corner speeds alone it is capable of 64 secs. It was even tested without the wing and lap times did not really decrease, thoughts were it gave too much drag, not the case. It is a case of a 6 speed and a 4.1 diff.

Time to look at the numbers and see what can be done. Possibly test a 4.3 and see what happens. The main issue is how quickly it does NOT accelerate down the main straight.

Hence, tweaking what has been built to get it better.

I find that hard to believe, your car going off your data is 5-10 km quicker down the main straight than my skyline. I watched you on Saturday drag a r34 off down the straight. Don't think you have any problem in straight line poke.

Hey everyone. I'm so glad that you got to drive all configurations of the track. Minx, the track overlays were very informative. The other good news for those who don't know, I have secured permanent employment with a local sign company and as soon as I finish my probation I will be back for the last event. Take a wander over to cidqld dot com dot au . Well done to all the drivers. Can't wait to get back on track.
Cheers, Alan

Great photos Lily.

So what's everyone's thoughts on the 86 that participated vs MX5s for the track? I assume it was a stock 86?

To me it seems that Toyota just took the original design plan for the MX5 (sans convertible bit) and built a car to match - an awesome handling fun car with not too much power.

Obviously driver-skill comes into play, but which MX5 (and modz) would rank closest in performance to the 86?

Very hard to make a judgement call on this.
They look fantastic on the track. They look like they are meant to be there.
But the two cars there, one had a few mods and slightly more experienced driver, the other stock, with an inexperienced track driver afaik

They ranked 9th and 25th out of 35 cars on the Clubman.
13th and 26th on the Sprint.
So they are certainly competitive.
Simon, its a it like comparing you and me the last time we were at Lakeside together, or QR.
From what I can tell, the last time you drove at LS was July 2012, you ranked 32nd and I ranked 3rd, with very similar cars.
May 2012 at QR, me 6th, you came in 30, out of 44.

Very similar car with different drivers placing quite a way apart in the end of day rankings.
Too many variables involved to, need more of those nice looking things to come to our track days..

Having raced a 86, the mx5 NC is the much better car in production form. About 2 seconds a lap. I.M.H.O.

The NC motor has better usable power and handles much better.

The Black 86 dríven by Mike Jones was build in SA by Willall Racing - naturally aspirated but has quite a bit of work done - Mike is a new driver but picking it up very quick, Tony in the white 86 was doing his first ever track day, his GTS is absolute as it came off the showroom floor and for what it's worth he beat me on both Clubman and Sprint circuits, they are quick regardless and both will be back having has so much fun!

The black has headers and cat-back upgrades, runs Toyo 888's, so that's a start and of course it sounds fantastic down the main straight

We also will have one of the 86/BRZ ladies probably join us at Lakeside in July after she did Morgan Park a few weeks ago and got the bug! Zoe's is a beautiful GTS which she has done quite a few upgrades to with wheels, tyres and it runs a Perrin cat-back, front pipe and overpipe etc etc

I'm sure toppertee will tell you having run an 86 in the Willowbank 300 that they are a fun car just like the MX5's

Any cars fun if you drive it fast enough  Or in my case try to.

I.M.H.O.

For a DD 86 would be my pick, but I would like it with a super charger. To give it more poke in a straight line... Bogan got to Bogan!

Track car MX5 NC hands down has a better suspension set up and motor. The one thing I did notice is how big the 86 is, it's almost as wide as my R33. The is plenty of room in the cab for people like me, over 6ft and like KFC and beer.

Mind you this is coming from a person who tracks a boat! I.E. Both the NC and 86 good cars

Based on the comments above, it seems that track days consisting of MX5s and 86's would be a good even mix?

Being a new car (ie. not too many people are keen on taking a brand new car to the track), this would be a great opportunity for many 86 owners to mix it up on the track with similarly performing cars until their numbers at the track increase - this works out well for everyone.

I've been inviting the 86/BRZ Club now for around 12 months and we have had a few - quite a few have done 'happy laps' but it's the next step up that maybe a few 'fear', I have been instilling in them 'no one will laugh - simply go at the speed you feel comfortable' so that's going to gain a few more!

Funny, sit a stock 86 beside an NB with the roof up and look at the height difference - not much at all! Both are cars you sit IN the seats, not ON the seats!

I am seriously thinking of doing a track day in my 86, but right now I'm content to fight for 2nd place in my class Championship!

Not really apples for apples, but my 1.9 naturally aspirated, using my Jap Nat and time attack times is 0.5 secs slower than the black 86 times on Monday.

Yes there is driver differences etc.

A stock 86 is 147 kw at 7000, where as for me it is 128 kw at 7000.

It is good to have non mx5 car club members supporting our track days, same as we should support theirs :)
