Charcoal canister?

Charcoal canister?
I've noticed on many of the overseas MX5 related forums that people remove their charcoal canisters.
I believe the purpose of the charcoal canister is to burn off the petrol vapor that is released in the petrol tank? Is there a requirement of for this equipment for Australian emissions laws? I can't imagine that anyone would ever check that your canister solenoid was working to ensure it was effective.

I've also noticed that a lot of guys in the US seem to remove these from their road cars, and wondered if I could do the same here. I came to the conclusion that it's there for a reason and I'm sure someone at the Transport Department would have something to say if I removed it.

Definitely part of emissions so you technically could not remove it.
But who would notice. They are supposed to be replaced to remain effective (80,000 kays), and I've never heard anyone doing that.

Might be detected if you were tested by the EPA for emissions like Blue94t was.

I've certainly never heard of anyone replacing them at 80,000km. Does Mazda even stock them as a regular spare part? How are they tested to see if they're effective or is it just a matter of "does it exist" If the solenoid never engaged it would be completely ineffective but I'm at a loss to see how that would be discovered. Maybe newer cars with more high tech ECU's report when the evaporative canister isn't working.
I'm not hugely worried about it being there, but in the interests of cleaning up my engine bay I was interested to see what was required.

My MX5 really only comes out for special occasions (like track days) so I'll just leave it all in place.

There's a post floating around somewhere I read a few years ago where someone cut their charcoal cannister in half and it was empty. The subsequent discussions went along the lines of "it's required in California but nowhere else so many are simply empty".
Anyone got an old one lying around to test this?
FYI: On NBs you'll get a CEL if you remove it.
