We can rebuild him. We have the technology ... better than it was before. Better. Stronger. Faster.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Getting a bit sick of this. 'Twas an exhaust valve not closing, for obvious reasons.
You may recall that last time I broke several springs. We all agreed it was because they were springs of unknown origin, used with an HLA cam but with solid lifters.
This time it's only one spring but it's from a set of known springs, of high quality, of the right size, straight from the maker, widely used by the aus MX5 racing community, with an HLA cam, with new HLAs. Also there's no sign that they've hit solid.
I'll take it to the machine shop tomorrow. In the meantime does anyone here have any idea WTF is going on?
At least the piston and the other valves are untouched.
I think I'll put out an EOI for a NB8A BP4W head. It feels like heresy. Besides this one is almost family ... but sometimes one just has to let things go.

Did you keep the solid lifters to put in the nba head. Can't help with the rest but very keen to hear the outcome.

You don't need a mechanic, you need:

At least it was only a valve spring, it could have been much worse!
Given it was only the one spring it might have been a manufacturing fault, it happens to even the best of makers out there.....
If you suspect there's a systematic fault with the way your engine operates then you would expect other springs to be suffering and potentially close to failure too.
Depending on how much money you want to throw at the problem, you could get your other valve springs tested (not sure how, X-rayed perhaps?) to see if any others show signs of fracture.
At least you would have a strong indication if it was just that one spring or if there's something more sinister at work here.

Probably the best case scenario with a zero comp cylinder. Glad it's not worse
