Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it. :)

There's no doubt that the standard radiator in an SE is a superior unit and in all likelihood would be all that I require for my purposes as I'm not going for huge power gains or planning to track this car. That being said I work on the basis that as components wear out I will always consider if there is a better product available rather than simply replacing with OEM. This improvement can be in the form of performance, reliability or some other factor such as astheics.

In the case of the radiator it appears that you have to start spending some serious $$$ before you get any real performance gains in this department, and if you go for an eBay cheapie you potentially even have poorer performance compared to the SE radiator sepecifically.

tomli123001 wrote:- However, the fins are less dense than on the SE.
- SE Radiator had this foam thing around to direct air. The aftermarket ones don't. Even with a cover plate in place, there is gaps in NB cars.
- I have installed an oil temp sensor in the oil filter relocation kit. The oil temperature did NOT drop in hard driving compared to before.

Thanks for the direct comparison tomli, a couple of thoughts on your observations;
- The lower fin density could lead to higher air flow rates through the 'cooling stack' (intercooler, AC condensor & Radiator) potentially resulting in improved performance at speed (just speculating here)?
- Foam?, I'm aware of this and it's the same case for all non-OEM radiators, I was planning to add foam to suit to seal this gap with whatever I end up getting.
- I suppose the lower fin density + 10mm thicker core balance out to have similar performance, I wonder if it would do better with foam added to seal the gap and force more air through the core?

I've come to the conclusion, for my purposes, that it's a decision of two options really, (others with different goals would obviously consider other options);
1) get a factory OEM replacement which would be good for another 10 years and be quite adequate for my uses (ironically this is also manufactured by Koyo).
2) get the aftermarket Koyo (pretty settled on this brand/model) which might perform slightly better under certain circumstances with foam installed.

OEM is cheaper and a known performer.... Aftermarket has possible benefits in terms of performance (maybe), reliabilty (no plastic tanks) and asthetics (shiny!) but comes with a weight penalty (extra coolant). The only tangible benefit in real terms of the aftermarket is asthetics really.....

So the choice is 'Bling' or 'Budget'!
Oh dear, I think I know which way I'll end up going.......

I got an OEM replacement from Mania which is apparently meant for the auto model, and has a thicker core. That might be an option...and they are cheap too!

My understanding is that the auto transmission radiator is either the same as or not quite as good as the SE OEM unit.

Irrespective, I've bitten the bullet and ordered the Koyo 37mm as it is only going to be ~$100 more expensive delivered than a new genuine Koyo OEM rad. I have to order it from the USA though to get that sort of price, hopefully the shipping doesn't take too long and it arrives intact! :|

I've also ordered a complete silicone hose kit from Mania.

It makes sense to replace all the 10 year old hoses while the system's drained.

Nev,
quick question, when you installed the Dann catch can, how did u deal with the OEM catch can return line (the one that goes back down to the oil pan). i guess you need to fabricate a plate or somesort to block the return?

cheers

For the moment the whole line is still in place with a plug at the top, shortly I'll be putting the car up on stands and while working under the car I'll remove the pipe and plug it down at the sump.

I haven't yet decided whether to leave the barb off the side of the engine in place and cap it or to make up a blanking plate as Lokiel did in this post....

A bit of an update on my earlier misadventure......

It's been 12 weeks now and I have had what will hopefully be my final X-ray today.
The assessment is that the bone has healed enough now that I can go much more aggressively on the rehab and will, fingers crossed, be free of the crutches by the end of the week. I am also now allowed to drive as much as I feel able to..... YEAH!

So this is what the healing looks like after 12 weeks, as you can see there's still quite a bit bone healing to go but, with the support of the Titanium nail, I'm slowly approaching normal again.
It will still be another 4-8 weeks until I can go back to work though.... Damn, not sure how I'm going to cope with that.....

Good to see the "modz" are going well and this just proves that "Titanium" is the best! :P

Glad to hear your healing well. Man that's a hell of a break! I don't think it was worth it just to get a holiday though

I think we can all agree on one thing here.....

This is a bit silly!

Oh well, have to find something else to do with these 4 spare OEM rims...... Given how much they weigh, the scrap metal value alone would probably finance quite a few mods!

Doesn't quite fill the wheel arches... Would the tires make the right diameter? I know you're doing it for giggles, but I think it would look OK with a bit more rubber.

It's actually an identical rolling diameter (and ironically about the same weight) as the factory steel 14" rims!

Going from a 14" 65 profile tyre to a 17" 40 profile tyre does look quite different though...... :?

Here's a shot from earlier in the thread of the two side by side.

Time for some coilovers in the Astina 8) Then off with it to Dann for a turbo kit

You may need a second job to pay for all of this, but totally worth it!
