If you are going to produce more power and use it on the street you can get good results with modest outlays.
Have a look in the dyno section to see my results.
The most important key is the same with any modified engine the cylinder head. Tread carefully with this there are many people who make lots of claims but are usually short on results. Go to a race meeting speak to people who use these cars and ask who does their heads or send me a pm for my head man who uses a flow bench and is not expensive really knows his craft. Its what got my results.
I could go on and I guess you want to know how much?
$3500 which includes $800 for a low km replacement engine.
Enjoy your journey. Terry.

Here's where the aforementioned numbers might into your thought process. So $3,500 just to do the head. Or $14,000 for a turbo car with everything done. Deduct the value of selling any existing MX5, deduct the $3,500 you didn't spend on the head etc etc.

viewtopic.php?f=73&t=63498

Is it a finished car? No, but no modified MX5 is ever finished.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

davekmoore again I will disagree, it is not 'just' a head. A head done well (port/polished flowed with matched cams/springs/valves/bore/pistons/crank) will give more improvement to an engine than any other mod (flamesuit on). If going FI then a different cam and compression ratio is required to that of a NA version, however this again is dictated by the fuel that will be used.

Ring up MX5 Plus and order the same head as what is on my car, if you want a bargin head have a look here http://mx5cartalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=63497. I think even Dann would agree that 'its not just a head'!

The head can be built for low power or top end power or for whatever the customer requires, it is all down to component selection and end user requirements, you do not get this from a stock motor. A stock motor gives you what the factory decides is the market demand. The car that you linked (and offence intended) is stock internals and nothing special (head fully reconditioned, valve seats recut, ports cleaned up). A reconditioned head is very different from a custom head.

However, custom head work does not come cheap hence why it is often neglected or berated.

I agree that its not just a head, having said that, to prove my boost is great point; drag race the car in davekmoores link.

Ill leave everyone with a Martin Donnon quote:

If lag is the time between pressing the throttle and making boost pressure, how much lag does an n/a engine have?

Thanks magpie, I will keep asking questions.

Thanks Terry, I didn't even know there was a dyno section! Asking q's at a race meet is a great idea. Already have a great machinist that could sort me out with head mods :)

Davekmoore, I don't want to go turbo. Already have a turbo rx7 and a turbo golf gti. Want to keep the mx N/A so I can use all of the throttle most of the time ;)
Also I've never modded a N/A car before so it's a fun exercise for me.

Thank you Wasp for your feedback.

Dann no one can argue with your point. Turbo will always out accelerate a N/A of the same cubic capacity in a straight line.
Can you use 100% throttle from the apex without wheel spin?

There are many benefits for both turbo and non turbo but maybe that never ending argument should be discussed in another thread. This thread is about the power you achieved from various mods. I don't see the point of a pissing competition but do as you will, I'll still read it :)

If you want power you need huge cams and compression and E85 and a very good intake and exhaust and an ECU and lots of balancing and headwork and good luck getting 130kw.

Dann I agree with you on what is needed for a NA engine.

Sore I suggest that you do your research on building a NA engine. If you do it right all you will need to do is drop the compression, change the cams and go FI when you need to.

Whilst I do have an Automotive Plus sticker on my car, they (MX5 Plus) are starting to get into making serious well thought out engines and it may be worth your while to discuss with Jason your needs and he can give you a budget estimate.

Looking forward to another NA build!

The point is that n/a engines lag forever.

Like the common jibe directed at Honda's. Vtec, all of the lag. None of the boost.

Dann I don't need 130kw. I'd be happy with 75 to start with. If I feel the need for more, I'll just drive my rx ;)

Hmmm, that logic sounds familiar - but then you realise that it's natural to lust for more power!

Why 75 specifically?
