cheap short shifter? ebay??

Postby kazama » Tue May 13, 2014 9:52 am

hey guys,
before i start, im aware this has been discussed before but that was years ago and ebay adds have changed since.

i like the stock shifter feel and throw however id like it to be closer to the steering wheel. so i was thinking of getting a short shifter then adding a 3" extension to in effect give me a similar feel and throw to stock but being closer to the steering wheel.
basically a miata roadster tall short shifter without the $400+ price tag

does anyone have any experience with the current short shifters for sale on ebay?

cheers

I'm about to order this one to test.
The way I see it, if it's sh*t, I'll put my stock one back on and have a loss of about $50.

I'll let you know in about 2 weeks.

A few months ago I bought a Cobalt SSK from Moss Europe and I think it's fantastic. IIRC was about $110.

I took the plunge a few months back and got the Miataroadster one - definitely amazing.

The fact that it came with all the other bits to replace the bushings/rubbers/washers wasn't bad either.
Because reasons.

I've just installed the eBay short shifter. Nothing but positives so far, however I dodgied up part of the install.. The plastic 'notch' in the larger ball was too narrow for the 'guide pin' thing in the upper collar, so I removed the notch. Still works, there's just a bit of rotational play (because the new notch is slightly wider than the guide pin) that -doesn't- affect shifting.

I installed mine yesterday too. I cut the head off the Allen key bolt. Shifts nice in the garage... Haven't dríven it yet.

Damn that would have been the better way to go.. Do you have any play in the shifter if you try to rotate it?

I purchased an ebay shifter as well, from 'cubespeed' though. It took a day to get used to it, I would say it isn't as smooth as the stock shifter, but its nice in a mechanical way. The notch in the gear lever fitted perfectly with mine, no need for any modifications at all.

Yeah... It all felt great sitting in the garage making broom broom noises but I took it for a drive today through my favourite mountain roads and it moved around a bit.
I think I can adjust it to make it sit right.

Anyway, I'll get around to it next weekend.
Still not sure if I prefer it to the stock one as the knob is a little higher and the action is shorter but also stiffer.

I also removed my center console. this showed that there is a small tear in the rubber seal around the base of the shifter so there is now more noise and nice hot rush of air at all times..

Tinkering is why I bought such a car so these little projects are fine by me.

Some pics for others...

Need to pay Mr Pham a visit to get a bunch of sh*t like centre console delete kit, leather door pulls.

Also need to find part number of the shifter base plate thing with the rubber to buy replacement.

umm.... what is this lower one you speak of?

I don't have one of those at all. where does it go? 3 bolts loot like it goes over those 3 bolts I've got in my pic.

Cool it's local.. I'll go get it from the guys directly.
