1993 1.6 or 1.8??

Postby revhead » Sun May 11, 2014 11:45 pm

Just picked up a 1993 mx5 na8. Now, confusion has risen while doing online parts shopping for it. All the drop down menus specify 89-93 na6, 94-97 na8. But I have a 1993 and its a 1.8? I checked it out, the build plate says 1993 November on it, part of the vin says NA3 (3 specifies 1.8, 1 specifies 1.6, I think from memory) I have raised letting on the cam cover as apposed to recessed, and my cas in on the exhaust cam from memory.

When selecting from the drop down lists, do i select 94-97 na8 despite me having a 1993?

I don't want to order all this stuff from the states only to find it doesn't fit in the engine bay or I have clearance issues with cai and strut braces, and I have extra/less sensors on my headers.

Yeah just order 94. The na8 were for the 94 model year. You'll find if you look there will be a compliance plate of when it was imported and that will say 1/94 or something. Mine is the same.

Mine is a November 1993 build, but it wasn't sold till April 1994. So it's a 1994 model. A guy at Mazda Australia told me it was called the NA facelift model at the time. I've attached the car information Mazda sent me.

Interesting. It says they should have come with a lockable centre console. It also labels the suspension as "shockers" which seems a very casual term for manufacturer paperwork.

yeah i believe mine is the first gen they stuck the 1.8 in. not sure how to confirm when it was sold though (in 93 or 94) the engine plate says nov 1993 but no sale date

lettering is raised on the rocker cover, that is meant to be the signature of the 1.8 where the 1.6 has recessed lettering

cas is also on different cams for each engine size

don't stress. its a 1.8

its the amrecans who confuse everyone. Not only with the way they write thier date but also what they call a car & when it was built.
The car might have been built in 1993 but as far as the americans are concerned it is a 1994 model.
Yes I know were in Oz here....but we tend to take up all the bad american habbits like fast food & sh*t coffee.

perhaps the other reason is that early 1993 NA were still 1.6
1,8 were in the later models of that same year. so online they have to perhaps draw a line somewhere or distinguish between models.
